26 Year Old Dianosed w/ Type 1 Last Week.
Hey Everyone,
I am 26 years old and was just diagnosed last week with type 1 diabetes. I was feeling "off" for a couple of months, and then last Monday I got really sick. I went to urgent care Tuesday night due to extreme vomiting and not being able to breathe. Urgent care had to call an ambulance, and I went to the ER. I arrived with a blood sugar level of 561, and was diagnosed within a couple of hours. After spending all week in the ICU, I got released last Friday, and it has been an extreme lifestyle change ever since. I am still getting used to testing my blood sugar, and using the insulin pen every morning and before every meal. It is also very frustrating to me to have to break 26 years of old eating/everyday habits. I am hoping everything gets easier overtime, which I'm sure it does and will. I also hope to find a good community such as this where I can communicate and interact with others who have the same issues/struggles as myself. I hope to talk to some of you soon! |

Welcome to the Forum!
It does get easier. Look for a Diabetes Support Group in your area and find yourself a good Endocrinologist, Diabetes Educator and Nutritionist. Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. Even though you are Type 1, these threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.
