Metformin and Anemia
Anyone out there with Metformin and subsequent anemia? An upper endoscopy and colonoscopy prescribed for me tiok place last Friday (with 0 conditions being found which could cause me bloodloss). Decided myelf (today) to start at some potentialities - like any medications I am on. Lo and behold Metformin CAN cause anemia. Saw doctor today and he thinks I should be pullef off it too (but by an endo).

Reference re: Metformin and anemia:
was found at health central.com: http://www.healthcentral.com/diabete...-159153-5.html I quote a paragraph therein: Diabetes drug therapy with metformin. Anemia occurs in nearly 30% of diabetes patients using metformin for at least three years. |

Thanks for the article, Hannah. I've been anemic for a long time and have been on Metformin for many years. My doctor isn't doing much for it other than order tests that all come back negative. I'll see what she thinks of this article. I'm also on Protonix for acid reflux. It surprised me that could cause anemia. Good for you for being proactive;-)

Thanks again. I am definitely talking to my doctor about this, although my next appt isn't until October. I think I'll drop it off at her office to read in the meantime. What will you use for your GERD problems? I have reflux which one doctor thinks is the cause of my frequent bronchitis, besides the other problems that bad reflux causes.

I read that Metformin causes Anaemia, B-12 Deficiency & Vitamin D Deficiency -- which in turn impacts calcium absorption. But considering its benefits, we should take supplements for the iron, B12 and Vit D. I have been on Metformin 2000mg for over 5 years and have evidenced this impact.
My doc had to give me 50000 units of Vit D to boost my #. Its back to normal now. but I have to be on supplements for Vit D & Iron & B12. Has anyone else experienced this? |
