Default insulin and weight gain... help!

My drs are happy w my progress. Oct 15 I was diagnosed w type 1 and it's now nov 18 and I've gained 8 lbs. most people would think it's no big deal but I'm also a heart patient w heart disease and have worked very hard the past 8 years to loss almost 100 lbs. I'm down to 173 (that's with the 8lb gain) I'm so frustrated. I'm counting carbs like crazy and exercising 3-4 times a week. I'm getting the insulin pump in 2 weeks and I'm scared to death my weight is just going to continue to rise. I'm eating baked fish salads veggies... I know how a diabetic should it... So it isn't that. While I'm happy w my sugars being under control I'm devastated that I'm gaining this weight dispite how hard I'm working. Help? Advice? Something?

Before I was diagnosed I lost about 10kgs and that was due to my body breaking down fat then muscle for energy. Once I was on insulin I put all of that weight back on quickly! I think it's normal and by the sounds of what you are doing it should sort itself out. Hope that helps 😃

It's taken me 8 yrs to lose the weight. It was the rapid weight loss. I'm just so devastated of the possibility of gaining weight. I know I can't stop my insulin but I don't want to become one of these workout 24/7 ppl. I just wish there was a happy medium.

I am sure that there is a happy medium for you. It appears that you have chosen a low carb diet plan and I assume that you count carbs and bolus for the carbs at each meal. Exercise can make a world of difference as well. You don't have to be in the gym 24/7, but it does take some effort on our part. It does appear that you are putting in the effort with the 3-4 times a week. Have you every considered actually calculating the number of carbs that you should have per day? The information is at the end of the Carb Counting 101 thread, in one of my last posts. If you get a chance, read the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, as it is good information for all with diabetes. Good luck with the weight loss.

keep calm and carry on - you won't keep gaining weight - insulin is a growth hormone and a bit of weight gain (up to 20lbs) is normal when you first begin insulin therapy, but it will eventually even out. I understand that your total weight loss was over 8 years but have you considered that the last bit of it was due to T1 symptoms (ketoacidosis)? I'd give it a few months, but if you're still unhappy, you might want to eventually talk to your Dr about another injection called Amylin - it's another hormone produced by the pancreas in response to blood glucose and has been shown to help with weight loss because it lowers the amount of insulin you need, slows gastric emptying and helps decrease appetite. but you're still VERY newly diagnosed, and I have a feeling the weight will even out over the next few months. exercise is your best friend right now though, because it will also lower the amount of needed insulin by increasing receptor sites on cells. 3-4 times a week is good, but if you can work out 6 days a week or even every day, that would be better (though always carry glucose tablets with you in case of hypos). Also, if you're not keen on exercise or the extra injection, a T2 drug called Metformin might help - it works by lowering the amount of glycogen produced by the liver, thus lowering the amount of needed insulin. more than one way to skin a cat, but I'm afraid you'll be hard pressed to find a Dr to prescribe either of these without you just giving it a bit more time. good luck!
