Default new with questions

I was told I was pre diabetic due to my morning fasting results ranging from 100-115. I was told to test 3-4 times a day and keep a food log for the next mth.

This morning I tested at 6:30 and it was 115. After getting kids off to school I went to sleep for another hour and half, then tested again which was 96. Tested 102 at 10:15, drank a mountain dew, tested 84 2 hours later. Shouldn't it have went up?

I don't understand how any of this works. It only seems to be high in the morning after fasting.

Any advice or thoughts as to whats going on? I went to the dr for headaches and dizziness and that's when she said to keep a diary.

Thanks
Kimberly

Kimberly;

Welcome to the Forum!

"Prediabetes means that your blood sugar level is higher than normal, but it's not yet increased enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Still, without intervention, prediabetes is likely to become type 2 diabetes in 10 years or less. And, if you have prediabetes, the long-term damage of diabetes — especially to your heart and circulatory system — may already be starting.

There's good news, however. Prediabetes can be an opportunity for you to improve your health, because progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes isn't inevitable. With healthy lifestyle changes — such as eating healthy foods, including physical activity in your daily routine and maintaining a healthy weight — you may be able to bring your blood sugar level back to normal." Reference

The morning test: 6:30 @ 115 is not good. Stress can be a factor as well. If you were stressing about getting the children ready for school that may be most of your problem. Stress can have and most time does have a negative effect on blood sugar levels. You may be experiencing dawn phenomenon. A lot of what happens the next morning is controlled by the what you ate the evening before. There are a couple of things that you can try. The first would be to take a 30 minute walk after dinner. Try this at your earliest convenience. If the blood sugar is still high the next morning, try eating a light snack before you go to bed. It doesn't have to be much, maybe a hand full of almonds.

The morning test: 8:00 @ 96 is good. You should be striving for fasting BS of between 70-99.

The test at 10:15 @ 102, drank a mountain dew, tested 84 2 hours later. Shouldn't it have went up? Not necessarily. It depends on how active that you were in-between the tests. An 8 oz. serving of Mountain Dew is about 31 carbs (160 calories) and it doesn't take very long to burn up if you are very active. If you were sedate or sitting watching TV that would be another story.

The headaches and dizziness can come from either hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or hyperglycemia (high blood sugar).

My advise to you: Read and learn all you can on your condition. Start with the "Pre-Diabetes Information" thread in the T2 Section. Then read "Blood Sugar 101" thread in the T2 Section. Then read the "Carb Counting 101" thread in the T2 Section. Do a Google Search for "dawn phenomenon". Soon you will know more than your doctor. Good luck with your control and management.

Thanks I will start reading now!

I was not very active after drinking the soda, just a little walking, but mostly sitting doing paperwork at my job.
