pump or insulin pen?
I am a new t1. I am almost ready to choose if I want a pump or if I want to keep going with the insulin pen. Any suggestions?
PS: I am almost 15 years old and I play baseball and basketball |

There are several threads on insulin pumps in the Insulin Pump Section. This is a decision that you will have to make for yourself. Weigh the pros and cons to help you decide. You may get great information from talking with someone that plays sports and uses the pump, as well. Good luck in your decision.

I was diagnosed at 12 with t1..tried the pump around 15 years old and honestly it did not make me happy at that age..i am female so between high school and boys it just was not right for me and i was unhappy and went back to pen..then later on around 23 i chose the pump again..i have been on pump steady now for 4 years and as annoyig as it is at times it is the right choice for me now at thiae point in my life..i am getting married in a few months and the pump is necessary if i want to have children one day so like i said then it was not good for my lifestyle but now as a mature adult with more info on the disease it is a great choice for me now and i luv it it makes u think about it much less then when you use the pen

I am 27 now and was diagnosed late with type one at 18. I have been on both the pump and the pen. I can see how being on the pump and doing sports could get in the way. At 18, I was even to self-conscious to stay on the pump. Now at 27 I am on the pen and it's not enough for me so I'm trying to go back on the pump. Two important things you need to remember is that every diabetic is different and it is ultimately up to you and your dr to make the right choice for you. However, I will say that IF and ONLY IF the pen regulates your blood sugars well, it is very easy to use and I enjoy it. I never liked the hassle of wearing the pump when I was young, however, now that I'm older and more mature I realize that overall your HEALTH is more important than anything else!!!! I can't stress it enough! Good luck! I would live to know what you decide and how it works for you!

I had an insulin pump in high school and played tennis, swimming, and softball. I recommend the pump! I am now 22 still using the pump!

I was diagosed when I was 5 and used the pump since I was 10. I'm 16 now and play several sports, as well as just being generally active (parkour!). I used the pen from 3rd through 6th grade. It's useful, but not as freeing as the pump. I actually take lantus and use the pump simultaneously. It allows me to disconnect during soccer, basketball, track and whatever other activities I want to do. I strongly recommend going with the pump. Just be careful to remember you have diabetes if you use it - it's easy to forget and then eat and do whatever you want.

Hi! I was diagnosed with type 1 at age 16. I'm 22 now. I always resisted the insulin pump because I didn't want to have anything attached to my body 24/7 and a reminder of my disease all day long. All that changed about a year ago when I discovered an insulin pump system called OmniPod. It is the ONLY tubeless insulin pump on the market and it has changed my life. It would be excellent for someone like you and I wish I had known about it sooner. Definitely check it out!

Hi,
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 5. I am now 19. I haven't had any personal experience with the insulin pump, although I have heard from many doctors that the insulin pump wouldn't be ideal if you are very active. I have played sports all my life and have taken insulin injections ever since I was diagnosed. It is a personal choice, and it would probably be easier for you to decide if you did some research Good luck! |

Pump! You can set temp basal rates for periods of time where you know you'll be more active.
