Unhappy HBa1c levels from Glucose Buddy

Hi,
I was due to have a pre-operative check at my local hospital today for a cataract operation on my eye. They refused to do it even though according to the Glucose Buddy Calculator my HBA1c was 5.6%. They said that it was only a calculation, and that HBa1c levels had to be obtained by doing a full blood test.

My last blood test was done on 11 Jnauary 2011 and I cannot have another one until 12 March 2011 (3 months). My hospital will not perform any operations if the HBA1c level is higher than 9% and my last one was 10.4%

You should listen to them, they are correct, the GB A1c is only a calculation and is no substitute for the lab drawn blood test. In most instances the A1c will not drop from 10.4% to 5.6% in a two month period. I think that you will find that your A1c is more in the neighborhood of between 8% and 9% if you are doing everything that you should. Here is why: The GB A1c calculator can only calculate the data that you put into it. If you have high blood sugars in-between your normal blood test routine then GB does not have this information in its calculations. Trust me when I say that the A1c lab results are more accurate than the GB calculations at his point. This is not to say that the GB A1c calculations do not have there place, you just need a lot more data for it to build on, and two months of data is certainly not enough.
