new to this
Hi, my name is Kristy and I am from Nevada. I grew up with a diabetic father so I knew what my risks were for me to become a diabetic as well. I did not take good care of myself along with being in denial. My company physical showed my glucose levels were high so my doctor did an A1C test and she diagnosed me as type 2. She prescribed metformin and I have been watching my levels and what I eat. I exercise more now (at least I try) twice a week. I am scared because I could lose my job if I get put on insulin. Any suggestions that would help me become healthier?

Since I was diagnosed I have made many changes in my life that seem to be working. I am not afraid to admit I'm scared too. It was a BIG wake up call. What I am doing is I workout every day (well maybe not so much on weekends). I walk/run about 2-3 miles twice a day. I also have started weight lifting once a day. Salads are now the main course with lunch and dinner. Lots of fish, too - salmon in particular. Oat bran or a poached egg on whole grain toast is my usual breakfast. For mid meal snacks, I have a glucerna bar or an Extend bar. The Glucerna ones taste much better. I have one travel mug of regular coffee with milk in the morning. After that I have switched to decaf. I love coffee and starbucks makes a great decaf pour over. I drink quite a bit of water as well. This helps with all the fiber.
With all these changes my levels are those of someone without diabetes. Ok maybe a little higher, but not much. I have also lost 15 lbs in one month and my modest beer belly is almost gone. It's a lot of work and a lot of change, but it's worth it. I'm always experimenting with different foods and bars to see how they affect me. If you want to share other thought and ideas let me know. This was a huge wake up call for me; like I said in my posting I was in denial. I have made significant changes in my life especially the way that I eat and now I am trying to work out as much as I can which comes out to be about three times a week. I a lot of salads now with low-fat dressing and when I get to where I'm going on my business trips, I try to walk about 15 to 20 minutes. It has help me quite a bit. When I went to see my doctor on Friday, I noticed that I lost 4 pounds which makes me feel really good. She's happy that my numbers are starting to come down along with my blood pressure as well. She is my biggest encouragement that keeps me going so I don't get discouraged. I just don't want to end up like my dad; he had a diabetic infection in his foot any infection got into his bloodstream and went up to his heart, so basically he died from his diabetes. But he didn't take care of himself so I don't want to end up like him. So if you have any ideas or thoughts, please let me know. Very nice to meet you John.

Welcome to the Forum!
Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.
