Default Pre-Diabetes

Hi, I am new. After being in denial for 2+ years, started Metformin and still ate as usual, sporadic exercise, watched my Ha1c climb...now realize I have to track what I am doing, am/pm BS, wt.
Started today with a low sugar low fat homemade peach smoothie. I could tell from log tool that counting carbs seems to be what is important? When it asks for grams as part of food entry, is that what they want entered, grams of carbohydrate? My preferred exercise is cross country ski machine, current goal 30 min every other day. Anyway, I am a nurse, even so I have much to learn. I graduated in 1978, so my education was some time ago. I am single and turn to food for comfort. So, I have a journey ahead of me.
