I was diagnosed at 23, 4 years ago. I thought I was home sick home with the flu and ended up in a coma. My neighbor found me passed out in my room and I was rushed to the ER where I spent 7 days in the ICU. When I was taken to the hospital by ambulance, apparently it took hours to diagnose me as diabetic. I had no family symptoms and since I was unconscious they were unaware of what was wrong. Eventually a nurse shift change prompted my new nurse to check my blood sugar and voila! I had extremely low potassium which almost led to cardiac arrest and was told by everyone I was lucky to be alive. My body was shutting down.
I'll admit that I had a very hard time adjusting to the diabetic lifestyle. I've always had a major sweet tooth and found it extremely difficult to be compliant on my insulin. I had always been slim and noticed that the insulin was making me fat. I was admitted into the hospital 3 more times in a year and a half for DKA. My endocrinologist refused to continue seeing me unless I began seeing a psychologist to help me deal with my denial of my condition. I refused and began to see a different endo and was very happy. Unfortunately, 4 years later I am still not in control of my diabetes. It is a constant struggle but I am definitely determined to get my BG under control! |

Diagnosed at 21 months old with type 1. Almost 15 and a half years old now, so I've had it almost 14 years! I don't remember life without diabetes, but the older I get, the more I wish I could know what life Could be like without it.

I was diagnosed when I was 14 months old. Got really sick and tested for it. I'm an identical twin and both of us got it within 32 hours of eachother. Most people get the luxury if knowing what a normal life is. I didn't!! Was the youngest person to go on the insulin pump, mini med 508. They sucked. Back to shots now. I'm on humalog and lantus. I'm 20 years old now. And doing good. Screw diabetes.

I was diagnosed when I was 7-years-old, nearly 23 years ago. I came inside from playing and told my mom that I was tired and I wanted a nap. She almost fell over because I was a very high-energy kid. I was also drinking a ton of water, and obviously, peeing a lot. My mom told me that I was lucky that they were able to catch it so early.
I've done a lot of experimenting with my eating, going from vegetarian to vegan and now I'm finally at Paleo. I've just ordered Dr. Berstein's book and I can't wait to read it. This low carb thing is working really well for me so far. |

February 2009 I was having frequent urination and always thirsty, I was in denial that I had diabetes but my mom convinced me to check my blood sugar and it was over 600. Having been doing well since then, I have my days when I hate the disease but I have a 4 year old daughter to live for and that keeps me going.

It all started when i was thirsty for water 24/7 i was in a hotel and even woke up in the middle of the night to drink water from the faucet without anyone noticing. I tried hiding this for about a week when my mouth started turning white all the time, however i got rid of this by drinking more water. I kept telling my mom I was okay and she trusted me however she begged me to see a doctor. After a urine test and showing all the symptoms on Feb 26, 2010 I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. I was 13,small and skinny, and now 2 years later i think i still have a lot to learn. Only about one or two people on both sides of my family had been diagnosed. However living far away from my family I was not familiar to diabetes and was very scared. After being diagnosed I had to be sent to a better clinic that specialized in diabetes because the equiptment they had weren't as good it couldnt calculate my BG and said it was 400+ mg/dls ... At the better clinic it still couldn't calculate and said 800+ mg/dls

I was diagnosed January of 2010. No one in my family has diabetes and I only went in to the clinic because I was pretty sure I was pregnant. Well I was, but they also discovered type 1 diabetes. They sent me strait to the hospital to confirm and to get me started on some meds so my baby would be ok. When I first went in my a1c was 9 something within two and a half months I got it down to 6.0 without the help of a nutritionist ( she made me cry). The hardest part was just when I was going into the second trimester I lost the baby. Since then it has been a struggle to keep up a good a1c. I am hoping to kick things into gear, to go see a nutritionist and start cracking down on a healthy lifestyle so when I am ready to have a child I will be healthy with healthy habits. I have always felt that my baby came down to tell me that I was sick and to get better. So that I would be healthy when he/ she is ready to enter into our world.
