New and looking for Support
Hello my name is Melisa and I have been type 2 diabetic for 11 years. Long story made short I have not been taking care of myself the way I should be. I watched my Mother deal with diabetes for my whole life and she passed away from complications of multiple health issues.
I don't want to be my Mom gone to soon in life (she was 53). I am married and I want to have a family and live to the fullest but it's so hard. My husband does not understand, My friends don't understand, and I don't understand why ME? (I know genetics is why but you know what I mean) I try for a couple weeks doing really well and then something happens. I have the best motivation in the fact that I want to have a baby and my Dr. will not let me until my A1C is at 6 or less. Last time it was check it was 11.2 I lack discipline; I lack motivation, I NEED HELP!!! I am even avoiding going to the Dr. because I’m afraid what they will say and that they will be made I’m not following their plan Please is there anyone out there that can help? |

Welcome to the Forum! I am sorry for the loss of your mother. Yes, most people don't understand what we go through on a day-to-day basis. Self education is one of the keys to successfully manage diabetes. Read the first three threads, in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance. Learn to count carbs, take your meds as prescribed, loose weight if you need to, get lots of exercise, test often and you will have the A1c that you desire in no time. If you have questions, just ask on the Forum. Good luck with your control and management.

You are not your mother. Your husband and friends have no idea what it takes to get Diabetes under control but that's OK too. Looking around, most Americans don't have a clue what they are doing to their bodies or they don't care, you do. I inherited Diabetes like you and have stopped asking why. Doesn't make any difference anyways, you can control it.
To get my A1c down, I had to double the exercise I was doing weekly and cut the carbs by 50%. Glucose Buddy really helps with the details and tracking your progress. Talk to a dietitian about counting carbs and setting some reasonable goals. If there is a YMCA or another gym close to you talk to one of the personal trainers about exercise and a plan that works for you. There are lots of choices besides tread mills and weights. My trainer is also a Diabetic. I think you can do it with exercise and counting carbs. |

Hi melissa, Im chris, I just joined too. Yep it definitely sucks being diabetic, I hate not being able to eat stuff I love. Today for example there was a going away party at work , so of course there was cookies, pizza, ice cream cake and brownies ! i was kinda proud of myself i didnt eat any of it. because i know that right now that stuff is poison to me . so i ate my turkey sandwhich on whole wheat, tonight i took my reading and my BG was 102 , i started out at 282 on april 11, so thats good. ive been eating tuna , chickn, immitation crabmeat , low carb bread( weight watchers is pretty good only 8 carbs per slice)and other food like that , The most important thing is to have emotional support from someone , family or a friend , do u have someone like that ? if no one supports you then ignore them its your body! you know you always have us, here , we are your diabetic family , good luck , keep positive and learn all you can, ok?

Wow...I joined 15 min ago and found this thread encouraging and informative. I'm a 52 y/o male in denial that I have diabetes until last week. I have one kidney and a kidney cancer survivor. I need to get with it and will watch this thread daily. Thanks to everyone here for sharing their stories. I don't feel alone now. Kevin

For me, I have issues with will power and motivation. I've gone up and down with it since 2002! Last dr appointment my a1c was 8.3! Dr was NOT happy. He wanted me to come back in and go on insulin. Well that really was a kick in the pants! I thought, OK you CAN do this. I talked to my friends, I found this site (which is SO GREAT for recording my numbers and seeing results!!!) and I use My FitnessPal for recording what I eat and my activity. (totally cut out all breads and starches) I go to the gym at lunch and I added a vigorous walk (just added light jogging to that!!) It's only been 13 days...YES i'm counting! LOL I post on Facebook what I do each day. I'm getting SO much encouragement from all my friends and they are helping me here at work too. I swear, food is an ADDICTION for me. But i"m doing SO much better reading these forums and finding new recipes online. AND seeing the numbers come down is such a motivator!!! YOU can do that same!!!! If you want to have a partner send me a message, not sure how you do that here, but let me know, maybe it would help to have someone to encourage you. It is so hard, and like I said it's only been 13 days...I pray I can keep it up!!! I know you can! WE HAVE to! WELCOME to this site! Sorry for the long rant...I just really relate!! |

Thank you everyone for the support... I did not know where my post moved to and just found it today!!! LOL
I went to the Dr. yesterday and I'm on new meds and I'm going to start off like this is the first day of my diagnosis. The past is the past there is nothing I can do about it now but I CAN do something about my future. My A1c is at 11.5 right now and they want it at 6 or less. I'm going to try my hardest to watch what I eat from now on. One thing I find hard is that the cost of the food they want you to eat is so much higher. I can make a box of pasta (Whole Wheat) and sauce for about $6.00 and it will last us 4 meals (2 dinners and 2 lunches). How do you find things cheaper but good for you? I am trying to get as much education as I can about what works for others and reading this forum has helped out a lot. Again thank you for all the support and I look forward to keeping up on everyone’s story! |
