Default Introduction: Diabetes and me

Howdy!

I was diagnosed with type 2 about 6 weeks ago. I had a feeling this was coming (higher than normal BG readings over the last couple years, and some symptoms that started a couple weeks before the diagnosis), so I wasn't really that surprised.

My initial A1C was 13.5 ("The highest I've seen outside of a hospital!" according to my specialist ), and the day I got my meter, I managed to bang out a reading of 441

In some ways, this was the wakeup call I think I needed to start getting my health issues heading in the right direction. I had started a walking program in January, and between then and now, I've lost 42 pounds (about 35 more to go). I've completely eliminated soft drinks from my diet, and have so far managed to resist the mountains of mashed potatoes that I love so much.

My wife has been amazingly supportive and helpful, and her willingness to make changes in our diet has made it much easier for me. I'm a very lucky man!

At six weeks in, my readings range from just under 100 to a max of about 140 at the 2-hour post-meal mark (fasting reading first thing in the morning is around 120), and I feel fortunate that I seem to have gotten my blood sugar under control in a relatively short period of time. I know many people have had a much tougher go of it.

Sometimes it seems easy, mostly just watching my carb intake, but at other times it feels like such a burden, especially when I have to pass up a decadent dessert or second helping of risotto. But all in all, I'm feeling very good, with more energy, and I'm sleeping like a rock, much to the chagrin of my light-sleeping wife

Welcome to the Forum!

It appears that you are doing great and congratulations on the weight loss!

Read the first three threads, in the Type 2 Section when you get a chance. Work on getting your fasting level between 70 mg/dl and 99 mg/dl and your numbers will be nearly perfect. Good luck with your control and management.
