Default 13 year old son just diagnosed T1

Our son was just diagnosed type 1 after being going to the ER 2/4/12. He was home the previous week with a mild virus, headache & nausea mainly. He very quickly became severely dehydrated and barely resoonsive over a few hours. When we took him in his BG was over 800 and he was in full DKA. We were blindsided. Needless to say his life and ours changed that instant. He is very slight in size, a good healthy eater and insanely active. We never saw this coming even though dads mom developed diabetes at age 6 and passers away at 64 from complications. My father was type 2 adult onset and also passed from complications. our son is the youngest of 5 kids. They are all being screened now. Here we go. It's been a am rough month of adjustments and lots of lows, but we're plugging along! Sorry about the length. I didn't realize how much I needed to share. Very therapeutic!

Welcome to the Forum! I am sorry to hear of your son's diagnosis.

Welcome to the world of diabetes. I have been exactly where you are at, my son was diagnosed at 10. Read and learn all that you can on your son's condition. Self education is one of the keys to dealing with this beast. Carb counting, and bolus insulin injections for the carbs, WORKS! Find a endocrinologist, diabetes educator and a nutritionist that will work with you as your "Diabetes Team". Good luck and let us know how it goes. I wish you and your son the best!

My husband was diagnosed 7 years ago with type 1.5 diabetes. Then 3 years later my 6 year old was diagnosed, and then only 6 months later my 12 year old was diagnosed. My 8 year old is now symptomatic. I sometimes feel like I'm gonna go crazy, but then I find strength that I didn't know I had. It's not always easy, but my girls keep me strong!
