Default Basal testing for MDI. Help!!

Hello,

I am new to glucose buddy and have been a type 1 for 21 years. I am in good control and have never had a serious low blood sugar where I need assistance. My A1c usually runs around the low 7's which I'm fairly happy with but I would like to get it lower. I feel a big issue for me is understanding how many units of Humalog I need for each 15g of carbs I'm eating. I'm not sure how to go about figuring this out. I'm on MDI (4-5) and test my BG at least 4 times a day. I am willing to increase injections and testing to help get my A1c lower.

Also, I'm not sure how to count fruits and veggies as carbs. Does anyone know of a good reference to use? And, do I need to consider just grams of carbs or grams of protein and fat as well.

I guess the first thing I need to do is understand how to calculate my basal level. Then figure out carb counting.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Andrea

Are you sure that you mean "basal"? The basal is the injection usually the first thing in the morning or the last thing at night or both. The "bolus" is the insulin injection used to offset the carbs after each meal. If that is the case, do a tag search for "Advanced Carb Counting", but first have a look at "Carb Counting 101".

Check this thread for basal level calculations and this one at the end for the carb info.

I hope the info helps!

Hi Danny,

I guess my subject line didn't match with what I was asking. I do want info on how to determine the basal level of Lantus that I would need and how I woukd go anout determining this But I also need to brush up on the carb counting and determining my insulin to carb ratio.

I was given my ratio by my dr! Taught how to carb count by the dietician! Ratios are different for everyone! Depends on your sensitivity to insulin and carbs. Ask you endo. Don't use some chart on the internet.
