Wekcome, and good you are cuttung out soda. You should start counting carbs or start keeping track of what you eat. I used fatsecret.com and iphone/android app. I suspect you are getting more carbs than you know. Anything made with white flour(bread, pasta, wraps, etc), rice, breakfast cereals, juices are all loaded with carbs. And not all carbs are created equal some process more quickly in the body and can spike your blood sugar. Everyone varies as well and what spikes some may not spike you. As well as what helps/works for others may or may not work for you. Your meter is your best tool, test before eating something and then either/both 1 & 2 hours afterwards and see how it affects your bg.

You don't need to cut out sweets completely. Go by your glucose readings. Anything over 120: no sweets! Just make sure to LIMIT yourself.

Ok the second poster went over board you don't have give up all meat etc etc ... The trick is moderation ... And a blend of fruit and veggies and meat .. Portion size is also important. Plan of your hand. Eat lighter meals at dinner and alittle more at breakfast and lunch were you can burn it of while working.. And yes I know what I'm talkin about I was 280 in may I contracted cellulitis in my right leg and had a 1/4 deep hole in my leg then I got it in the other . My ac1 was 7.8 and all blood panels were up. 3 months ago I was down to 247 my legs have healed and my ac1 was 6.5 . On thur nov 3rd I went back I'm 229 my ac1 is 5.8 that's right 5.8 my avg blood level is 93.7 and my doctor is think of pulling me off all meds ... Now the best part is the 51 # came of with diet only no no no exercise I just cut down portions and did my eating in moderation

Follow Daniel 1:2 ........
I was over 250 out of bed and on dec 25 i reached the 469 mg/l. So i decided to change my life habits. Now i loose 26 pounds, 140 or less out of bed, eat only potatoes and carrot, i feel better, still loosing weight and in ocassion i reach the 100 mg/l. Please try it!
