Unhappy A1C Test-What the Heck???

I am feeling very low right about now. My A1c on Glucose Buddy currently reads 7.1, (initial diagnosis 12/09 was 11.3) and I just got a call from my doctor saying that my A1C test from this week reads 8.5!!!!! How can this be?

A year ago my GB vs. doctors test numbers here were off by a tiny amount, but nothing like this. This is just horrible! Can the 8.5 be right and GB so very wrong?

I have to go into see the doctor on Monday and am afraid she will increase my Glipizide dramatically due to this number. Help....I want so much to be good at all of this. :-(

Theoretically, the a1c is a snapshot average of your bg levels. GB is only able to give an average of logged bg levels, so may not be as accurate. You should share the numbers with your doctor, keeping this in mind. Congrats either way--it's an improvement from the initial A1C!

we typically check our BG fasting and 2 hours after meals. the first thing that fails in a T2DM is the first phase response after eating. what this means is that not enough insulin is secreted just after eating. this causes our BG to be high for 2 to 3 hours after eating. the a1C is a snapshot of the last three months. Chances are, your numbers collected are not capturing when you run high. I can say you are doing a great job judging from your A1C reduction. Chances are you will be more impressed with your next test. The next one will have lower blood sugars in the 3 month snapshot. I doubt the dr. Will increase your medication as long as your numbers improve. Be sure to take your log book with.

Default A1c

I too became concerned that my latest lab A1c result was significantly higher than what I had expected based on GB and my own estimates. My nutritionist suggested that post-meal spikes are probably elevating the A1C value and that I should test after a meal to get a better idea of how meals are affecting my glucose levels. I currently test only pre-meal and bedtime.
