I was diagnosed back in 2000 at the age of eight.. I'm 19 now. I was diagnosed a year after my little sister was diagnosed. We were conducting a panda study (blood test between family members of a diabetic to see their chances of becoming a diabetic) and my mom check my blood sugar which was 300 and something. We went for a walk/run came back checked it again and it was in the 400s so my mom called my sisters doctor and she told her to bring me in.

Type 1 at age 36. After much assumption that I was type 2 by Doctors. Had to insist they start me on insulin while they waited for tests to come back. Blood sugar was in 800's.when results came back as type 1 doc says to me "you are type 1"! I said I hate to say I told you so but...
Amazingly no one even showed me how to give myself shots, just gave me scripts and sent me on my way. Thank God for the Internet where I learned how to give myself injections.
Today I have a pump and a new Doctor :-)

Hey, I'm Mark,

I was diagnosed in 2001, when I was 3 years of age. I started to drink lots of water, to a point that I woke up in the middle of the night and took the water that my Mum brought up to bed with her. One night she threw the water out the window after I was getting angry and upset that she didn't give it to me, I started crying.

The next Monday she took me to my GP. They did a blood test on me and it came back high. They said I needed to go to hospital straight away.

I was in hospital for a few days while they did tests on me and stuff. The tests came back positive, I had diabetes );

I am now 13 and have dealt with it very well. I hope it has gone, and continues, to go as well as it has gone for me as it does for you.

- Mark

Wink diagnosed at 39

I was diagnosed with type 1 this past January 2011. I am 39 years old and I thought really healthy! It was kind of "lucky" that we caught it so early. I was not feeling bad at all but had gone in for some routine testing and for some reason I found myself saying "maybe we should do a fasting test because 12 years ago I had gestational diabetes". I remember the Dr. saying to check my BG periodically because gestation diabetes can be a marker for full diabetes later in life. Shocked to actually hear that my fasting numbers were 220. A1C was 10.8! Took awhile to sink in, then went through feeling angry, then depressed. Not fair that I eat healthy, workout regularly and get this at 39!!
Now I am going on 9 months. It is a daily battle but my lows are fewer my highs are happening less (still working on this) and I am waiting for my insulin pump to replace my injections.

Hi alybrown,
I got my T1 at 36, my brother at 34. There are no certainties in life with T1, both me and my brother worked out plenty, eat right and took great care. As we got T1 we both took it with a shoulder shrug, it could have been worse or something else. As the treatment today is manageable there is not much holding one back. We live as we used to, eat what we used to except for the injections. I’m also pushing 9-10 months right now (diagnosed in dec -10), and I’m feeling like I’ve done this my whole life. In the end, there is so many people in the world who struggle harder than I do, so I just enjoy my days to the fullest. Keep up the good work and I hope you get some relief with the pump.

Splix,
Thank you for your response! It is amazing how many people I am hearing getting diagnosed with T1 in there 30's. I agree with you, about things could be worse. I Tell myself that all the time. It is not cancer and I got this instead of my kids (thank god).
I am definetly getting better with the carb counting. With me it is more of learning which foods digest slower than others to prevent those lows.
Sound like you are doing well with that?
Thanks again for your response. It is nice to hear a positive outlook on the T1 life!

Hi, I was diagnosed on October 23 1998 On my 6th birthday. We were at my aunts house (she's diabetic along with myself my sister and my father) and they tested my sugar and it was about 255 if I remember correctly and I still remember the look on my moms face . She was so upset because she knew what was going on. She took me to the hospital and while I was there all the nurses felt bad for me and bought me presents ... Ill be 19 in 7 days and that makes it my 13th year with type 1

Hi everyone, was diagnosed when I was 31 back in 2008 and ignored every single sign I had of it, I guess maybe because I didn't want to believe it. Long story short I woke up in the hospital 2 days later after having a BG of (you may not believe this) 1500 and lived to tell about it. I am grateful to be alive, but have struggled somewhat to still want to believe it. My brother has had it since he was 4, so familiar with the disease. I have gotten much better at this and my average is around 152 now for BG, very happy. It takes discipline and hard work, however never give up hope. A light came on that made me realize how lucky I was and not to mess this up, I was given another chance and here for a reason. It does get easier.
