Default New diabetic

Scares me really. I can not get my fasting sugars down. Through the day they are ok. I'm trying to figure this out! Don't want to lose my toes, eyes, or kidneys.

Welcome to the Forum!

Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.

Default New type 2

Just found out today I am type 2 after having horrible uncontrolled gestational diabetes with my son who is now 8 months old. I was "diabetes free" when he was born or so I thought. I am very overwhelmed that I am dealing with type 2 so soon. I will be put on Metformin once my A1C results come back but my numbers have been high and my Doctor told me I am most likely going to be put on it. I am frustrated trying to figure out how to deal with the diet because it is so different than with gestational. I feel like everything raises my bs

Acupuncture works wonders to lower sugar. So do Cinnamon, Berberine and Bitter Melon capsules. Good luck.

Metformin is a horrible drug my poor husband was on it for 3 years. He never knew when he would vomit or have uncontrollable diarrhea. Avoid it if you can. The side effects are terrible. Januvia, Tradjenta or Glipizide are MUCH better with hardly any bad side effects except for some sore muscles Good luck.

Aside from the distress of GI side effects, Metformin is one of the most innocuous drugs around. The others you mentioned create the possibility of (life-threatening) hypoglycemic episodes - especially if you reduce carb consumption to control blood glucose, lactic acidosis, and put stress on the the pancreas and may be linked to pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer (both life-threatening conditions). (One study had shown "no evidence of a link," - which is not the same as establishing there is no link, especially since some of the consequences - like cancer - would be slow to develop, and will take years before we know the full story.)

If I get to the point at which I need more insulin, I would opt for Metformin and insulin supplementation. That allows for precise dosing, without straining the pancreas, and minimizing the chances for hypoglycemic episodes.
