Hi! A quick summary of what I've learned about waking BG. Your body develops a pattern tied to your sleep habits, of putting BG into your system the couple hours before you normally wake. This to provide some extra fuel for you to use in rousing and beginning your day. In non-diabetics this BG is turned easily into energy. In diabetics, the body does not quickly convert it to energy so it ends up elevating your BG.

I suffer from dawn phenomenon but a change in taking my lantus at night helped as well as a tiny bump of novolog when I'm high before bed. Try a protein snack before bed that helped me too.
