Thumbs down Metformin and Diet

Ok, so I'm confused and my diabetes educator is out of town. I thought I'd post a message and maybe you lovely people can give me some insight. So I had an A1C of 7.6 about 2 months ago. With diet and exercise, my blood sugars ranged between 74-165 with an occasional high of close to or just over 200. I started Metformin ER 500 mg once a day after about a month of doing diet and exercise. With diet and exercise included, my blood sugars now range from 85-175 with a high of 241!! My question is if the medication works, which mine obviously doesnt at this dose, can I basically eat what I want or at least start adding foods back into my diet that had be cut out? I mean, what's the point in taking the medication if it RAISES my blood sugar or has no noticeable effect?

I believe the meds and diet work together. No matter what medication you are on you still need to watch what you eat - keep the carbs low.

Temperance;

I will have to agree with the previous poster (janzar) meds and diet work together. No matter what medication you are on you need to watch what you eat. Exercise and keeping the carbs low insures lower blood sugar measurements. This is the only way to combat T2 diabetes, since you are obviously not insulin dependent. You should read the Blood Sugar 101 and the Carb Counting 101 threads carefully.

In order to keep T2 Diabetes in check most people must make lifestyle changes. If you are willing to do this then this link Post Prandial Testing will be of benifit to you. I did go back and read your introduction. I see that you are a nurse and that you are currently doing the 1hr and 2hr PP tests. Atleast by doing this you know what foods spike your blood sugar. Take the Diabetes beast by the horns, you will persevere! Good luck with your management!
