Cocktails???
Is there any safe use of alcohol with diabetes (type2). I would like to have a beer of cocktail now and then.

I know this is in the Men's Room but I think it's a general question and I actually have some experience.
Beer (and wine) has carbs - don't forget to bolus for it if you're on insulin. Alcohol itself doesn't have carbs, but be careful with the mixers. Can't go wrong with something like seltzer or diet soda (tonic DOES have carbs) People typically experience highs right after drinking alcohol because of beer/wine/mixers and not bolusing correctly. Alcohol itself, however, will LOWER your blood sugar, but it does so a good 6+ hours later since it takes forever to metabolize. If you're a T2 on insulin, you have to be careful with this because you can get low blood sugar in your sleep. Eating complex carbs while drinking or a snack before bed can help prevent this... and as a T1, I even set my alarm every 2-3 hours (to check my BG) and keep apple juice on my night table if I'm out celebrating that night... but I have real problems with hypoglycemic unawareness in my sleep - I go low and don't wake up which had lead to seizures. If you're not on insulin, just keep the carb content in mind. Also if you're T2 looking to lose some weight, keep the calorie content in mind. Alcohol has, gram for gram, ALMOST as many calories as pure fat and ALMOST double the calories as carbs. carbs - 4 calories per gram protein - 4 calories per gram fat - 9 calories per gram alcohol - 7 calories per gram |
