Newer T2-new here
Hi all,
I was dx w/T2 in January of this year. Complete & TOTAL surprise! I take 500mg of Met 2x a day & have started regular exercise & I've lost 8#'s since I started 2/7 Already had to alter my diet after being dx w/Celiac Disease in Oct. of last year....so I was hoping that the new dietary restrictions wouldn't be so bad....NOT! I had made my own excel spreadshet for my BG's but left out 1 important factor (TIME...duh!) and was keeping a separate food journal. Heard about Glucose Buddy on another Diabetes chat forum & thought I'd come over & give it a try. Data-entry is NOT my favorite thing to do! But I did get all my records into My Diabetes section except for the FOOD. I'm trying Dr. Bernsteins Low Carb diet (for weight loss & BG stabilization) but have been tracking calories, fat and protein along with my carbs. So, how would I go about entering what for F? Sorry that my question is so basic...I know once I 'get it' I'll have a slap-my-forehead moment. |

Welcome to the Forum!
Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management. Congrats on the weight loss! Food input is addressed in the "GB Help" thread. Adding Foods: The food entries are a bit different from the blood glucose entries. Under Add Logs; Food; Add Food; Add Log; Create a food called Carbs. (grams), then pick that food each time you input your food. This method is very simple and lets you keep up with your food by logging carbs. However, to effectively use this method, you will need to learn to carb count. Try something simple first: Under Food; Add Food; Press + in the top right hand corner; Type in a name {I use Carbs. (grams)} and save the food. Then under Pick Food(s) you should be able to pick the food (when done successfully you will see a check mark on the right hand side), then press Add Log at the top left, this takes you back to Add Log menu where you should be able to input the grams.

GB is awesome for tracking carbs, but if you want more detail in terms of protein, carbs, fat, etc. I really like Cronometer.com because it allows you to set your own parameters - so say you want you diet to be 20% carbs, 50% protein and 30% fat, you can set it up and it will show you how much of each you've eaten each day. It also breaks down your macro and micro nutrients so you can see where you might be deficient in certain things and you can supplement as needed.

Just after I posted this thread I started poking around & found the GB Help thread....so I've already had my slap-my-forehead moment....sorry y'all didn't get to see that... I don't think I need to go anywhere else...counting the calories, fat & protein were habits left over from Weight Watchers (looooooooong ago). I see how I can do a simple count for them here, too; anyways. Well, I have to run & data-enter all my food from the last month...gee, is it lunch time YET? |

I better add a little bit about myself (PROCRASTINATION at it's finest didn't I mention that I don't really like data-entry?)
I am 46y/old living in N. Florida. Our house is made up of me, DH, DS, DD & her BF and our 3 (indoor) cats. My whole life I've been 'peculiar'. Just couldn't seem to "get" social things. Found out in 2008 why: I have Aspergers Syndrome (or at least I do until May 1st of this year when POOF it'll be gone because of the eggheads in the American Psychiatric Association have re-written the DSM. DSM-V is being released on May 1 & at that time I will magically be changed to an Autistic Adult) I will continue to call myself an "Aspie" even after 5/1 though...because I'm stubborn (& intelligant enough to realize that although Aspergers was in the Autistic spectrum before-it was not so closely associated with it as it will be after 5/1; but in any case-I have CLASSIC symptoms of a middle-aged woman dx with it) My DS also has the Celiac Disease (and what a pain in the @$$ it is!) we both found out last fall. So, we cannot eat: wheat, rye or barley....do you know that some COLESLAW has wheat? And MANY hair dyes! Found that one out in hindsight--last summer when I had my hair colored at the Salon I had a GINORMOUS reaction to the dye [never had b4] so I decided to stop coloring [have been doing it since my early 20's anyway] come to find out that MANY beauty products use the gluten from wheat as a thickener. So, I'm REALLY "in style" with a 'reverse-ombre' hair color My alarm just went off for my 2hr pp breakfast check...so I'll go do that & then hit my data-entry (did I mention that I ***hate*** data entry?) |

lol your post is hysterical. don't worry, you're not alone. I'm T1 and don't have aspergers but I do have a sort of mood disorder and have suffered from depression on and off most of my life. I'm on "crazy" meds - Lamictal, Prozac, Neurontin... AND although I don't have Celiac officially, I've noticed that I'm very sensitive to gluten and so I eat mostly gluten-free... you are DEFINITELY not alone in any/all of those categories good luck with your management of all and congrats on the weightloss!
I think if you look into the paleo diet, you'll find it particularly helpful for you. I'm not a huge fan since I'm very active and LOVE my carbs (mostly fruit and things like quinoa, farro, etc.), but I have friends with Celiac and even Crohn's who find it very helpful. |
