bg's high after infusion set change
Has anyone had trouble with bg's going higher after changing the infusion set? I use a revel pump from medtronic. I just got it and this is my first change. Some insulin did leak out from the previous site. If this has happened to anyone, how long did you wait before deciding whether or not to change your set? I use the quik-set. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

couple of ideas:
1. do the sets go in at 90 degrees or 45 degrees? if it's 45 degrees, you might want to try one that goes in 90 degrees for better absorption 2. you might be putting the set into scar tissue which will affect absorption. even if you are new to the pump/infusion sets, if you're placing it in a spot where you have injected quite a bit, you might find that placing it in a "new" spot (back of the hips/above the butt or in the back of the arm) might work better. it could even be a case of the canula getting "kinked" or "bent" - this happens from time to time, but isn't too common. it probably happens to me a couple of times a year. |

I have the Medtronic paradigm 722 and use the quik set. When you insert make sure you are standing up so the cannula doesn't get kinked. And if its not that then wait an hour or two in attempt to get your blood sugar down and if it won't the. You need to avoid that area of skin for a bit because its likely that there is scar tissue built up. I switch between using the front of my thighs and further back on my hips (and occasionally the back under side of my upper arms).

I always give myself a bolus of at least 1 unit right after I switch because sometimes the flow is obstructed.

scar tissue
You have to escape that range of skin for a spot since its likely that there is scar tissue advanced.

I would be particularly alert to kinking. It simply blocks insulin flow without any external evidence such as a 'no delivery' message. It happens to me perhaps once every two months, and I haven't identified a cause.
