Default natural birth with diabetes

I got pregnant two years ago and had planned on doing midwife/ natural birth, but then I found out I had type 1 long story short I lost the baby in the beginning of the second trimester. When I was pregnant my doc pretty much told me I would have to have a C-section.
My question is has anyone had a natural birth with midwives while also dealing with diabetes?

Hey megaton. I'm so sorry for your loss, it must have been very hard to deal with. I'm not sure about the standard procedures in USA, but in UK the woman usually get a choice. However, it is recommended that they are induced at 38 weeks due to complications related to diabetic mums, such as big babies. Good luck x

It's also worth noting that diabetic mums are put on a "sliding scale" insulin infusion to ensure tight control of BS throughout labour, so it'd not be considered a totally natural birth due to IV infusions etc. however a vaginal birth is certainly possible and happens more often than not in the UK.

I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 6! I have also had 3 children. All were induced early and larger babies. I did NOT have a c section, but did do an epi. It depends on the doctor and the way your diabetes is managed during your pregnancy.

I could have chosen to go natural with my last one --- but I was nervous and wanted to be prepped for anything. Now adays with all the advances and everything, it is possible, but you need to be open to complications and a most likely c section. Simply because the babies do tend to be much bigger.

If you plan on a c section, ten end up being able to do natural you will be that much happier! It is very difficult the entire pregnancy and about 5 times as many visits to docs as someone who doesn't have diabetes... But worth it
