Diagnosed with GD but blood sugar never high?
Hi ladies,
I was diagnosed with GD again with my second pregnancy but I'm so confused by it because I have a blood glucose monitor from my first pregnancy and despite not being overly careful with what I eat, my readings are always low!!!! With my first pregnancy I was shattered when I was first diagnosed with GD. My GTT figures were right on the 'cut off' point for GD. I went to the clinic, got my monitor and started tracking my blood glucose. It NEVER reached limit of 7 two hours after meals and it never got close to 5.5 before breaky. Even the specialist at the Diabetes Centre told me at my follow up appointment that my levels were great and that he felt it was likely that I did not actually have GD and I was told to only check my blood glucose randomly to keep an eye on things. I relaxed with my diet and found that no matter what I ate, it never went high. Now second time round I started checking randomly after 12 weeks and found my levels to be normal. Last night I ate shepherds pie with corn on the cob, broccoli and peas and even washed it down with a full glass of cherry coke that my MIL bought for me and my reading was 5.4 two hours later. My hubby asked to check his too and he was the same as me, despite not having any coke!!! Then I get a voicemail later that night from the hospital saying I have GD!!!! This morning I made myself a HUGE bowl of honey weets for breakfast just to see if my blood sugar would go up, I checked it 2 hours later and it was 5.6.....I would have thought that if I had GD my blood sugars would be higher than that after a big bowl of sugary cereal???? Sorry about the long post, I guess I'm hoping anyone who does have GD can tell me if their blood sugar is generally higher after eating 'naughty' foods. I just don't know how I get these test results back saying I have it when my blood sugar is never high..... Anyone else's personal experiences would be most appreciated All the best! |

That was the way I was during my first 4 pregnancies. I would always test "positive" for GD and would have to check my blood sugar levels 4 times a day but they were never high...except the one time I ate chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and washed them down with a big glass of chocolate milk...lol. Then, with my 5th pregnancy, I didn't even make it to the testing at 24 weeks. I started having problems with high blood sugar levels at 10-12 weeks. I ended having to be on glyburide once a day. With my 6th pregnancy, my GD kicked in a little earlier and I ended up having to be on glyburide twice a day. And then, with my 7th, it kicked in around 7-8 weeks and I was on the glyburide twice a day but still having trouble keeping it lower. They tried to up it to 3 a day but that caused my blood sugar levels to get scary low so they lowered the dosage back to 2. And, unfortunately, after I had my 7th, the GD didn't go away. I just found out that I'm expecting #8 and am so worried because I'm only 5 weeks and my fasting levels are already in the 120's. One hour after eating is not good either.
Sorry for the long post...I guess what I'm trying to say is that you're probably like me, borderline right now and not having to worry about it right now but know that it can change and get worse with each pregnancy. |

Thanks for your reply. I found out that my BG was 8.0 two hours after the sweet drink and the cut off for GD diagnosis is 7.9 so I am right on the borderline again.
I will keep monitoring and eat well to ensure its managed well throughout my pregnancy. Shake though, it's summer here and all I'm craving is slurpees hehe! Best of luck to you with your 8th pregnancy |
