Dealing with Low Blood Sugar
I recently had to deal with this and I thought that I would mention some things that we as parents should make sure that we keep on hand. Here is my list:
1. Orange Juice 2. Glucose Tablets 3. Honey; in small plastic bottle with squirt type lid 4. Glucagon Emergency Injection Kit link Here is a pretty good article link with some good information at the bottom. Having this equipment on hand, and knowing how to use it, will most likely save you from making a trip to the emergency room. I pray that you never have to use it!

Hi Danny,
Another great "low" fixer is coke. A small bottle or can. Kids will take to it quicker than OJ and of course no acid for the tummy either. We also use the apple juice boxes. 15 grams per box. Perfect for a low. Glucose tablets in the tube containers that they can put into their pockets quickly. We go so far out our house to have small fridge in one of the bedrooms stocked with apple juice bottles, coke cans, etc. for those quick 2am lows that might come around. Sure better than stumbling down the stairs to the kitchen! Regards! mischloss |

Good idea, thanks for your input! They tell me that you can now get the glucose gel in tubes that actually tastes pretty good, although I have not used it.

Our son is 2. When he is low we sometimes have trouble having him eat or drink. We keep a tube of cookie icing on hand. There are 15 carbs per tablespoon. It is easy to shoot in his mouth even when he is half asleep. It also tastes pretty good.

Another great "low" fixer is coke. " Hi there just thought I'd mention something that I've heard about coke - studies have shown that the consumption of coke by people who are under 18 increases calcium output in urine. Coke literally leaches calcium out of children's bones. This does not occur after 18 and they think that it only affects us this way whilst our bones are still forming! We use apple juice and jellybeans for lows. |

I've been diabetic for 39 years, since I was 9 months old. My parents always kept the cake icing on hand and maple syrup rubbed on the inside of a cheek works pretty well, also. Now that I am older my treatment of choice is a liquid glucose shot sold at CVS pharmacies. The bottle is easier to open than the gel and it tastes way better than the tablets. Another good, easy to carry, staple is Smarties candy. One of the mini rolls is 15g of carb and the large discs convert like a glucose tab. They are usually cheaper than the glucose tabs and aren't as chalky.

I hike and ski a lot and have come to love the durability of Dole Pineapple Juice in cans. These cans are more like soup cans than soda cans and I never worry about them leaking. I can usually find the Pineapple Orange combo as well. The juice is not from concentrate plus it is vitamin fortified. One 6 oz. can carries 22g Sugars. They come in 6 packs.
