New Onset from Michigan
Hi all. I went into the ER suffering from ketoacidosis and renal failure and that's when I was diagnosed. Next Monday, when I meet with my endocrinologist, I'll find out my type. So far, I'm being treated for type 2. I'm on 25 units of long-acting in the morning and 4 Units, plus a sliding scale based on my glucose level, per meal. This app is great for keeping track. Here's a tip for an app if you'd like to track your carbs and meals. Check out Fat Secret app. It's a great tool. I wish us all the best in managing our diabetes.

Today, I had my first follow-up appt w/ my endo since being diagnosed. She said my "phase of glucose toxicity is over!" She reduced my basal insulin by 5 units to 20, and changed my bolus insulin to a fixed 4 units if my BG is >100, or 2 units if <100. My doc also told me I can skip my dinner insulin on the nights that I roller skate or use my treadmill. Bet you can guess what I did after eating dinner tonight. :-D. In addition to reducing my insulin, the game plan is the use of Metformin. this evening, I started with 1 pill with my dinner. By week 4, I should be taking 2 w/breakfast & 2 w/dinner. I feel great and hopeful, like there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

Good one mate. I had keyto and that was one of the worst experiences of my life. Exercise is key. You don't need to run marathons but a little work out or activity to burn some sugars is great. Good luck.

Yesterday, my doc told me I can stop my bolus injections now that I'm taking Metformin twice a day. I'm so happy! Plus, the company I'm doing contract work for offered me a permanent position which I readily accepted. Now I'll have a better health insurance plan to help me pay for my medical expenses. Yesterday was a great day.
