I will try to keep this short, because I have an extensive type one history. I was diagnosed in the early spring of 1986. I am over 40 now and doing pretty well, despite the adversity the diabetes has given me.I have spent a lot of time going in and out of the hospital. I went blind due to the diabetes in late 2004 and my kidneys shut down and now I am on dialysis since 2007. However, this has not slowed me down in living my life. Before I lost my eyesight, I was a professional tote truck driver for six years, I was also a club manager and bouncer for eight years, I was also a printing press room for over 15 years, and also a car mechanic for all of my life. Now that I have lost my eyesight, I had to scale it back just a little bit. I have had a passion for H rock and roll all of my life, so now I am a drummer and I will play with various bands locally for the public. I am mentioning this, because it is a very high energy thing to do. I also install and operate various audio systems for churches in the area, which requires all lot of work and memory on how things work and already laid out.
Please forgive the typos in this, as I am using a reader on my phone to type it all out. That should read that I have a passion for 80s rock and roll. I have been through a lot of struggles due to my diabetes, but don't let it slow you down in living your life. I am forced to live my life on a knife edge, because I can fall off either side in a heartbeat. My numbers are nowhere near perfect, but I do my best to stay on top of my diet and my insulin I encourage everybody with diabetes to not let it ruin your life. Life is not over just because you have diabetes. When I started, there were not many reasonable treatment for diabetes. Now there are many treatments for diabetes and there is no reason that you can't go on living a normal life. Smile and have a nice day. |

48 years T1
I was diagnosed at age 4, which is 48 years ago. I've been on insulin my entire life. I have no complications at all and consider myself very, very blessed.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 in October 1964 when I was 29. It was about 11 months after my first child was born and no one that I know of in my family had ever had diabetes. So last year I celebrated of 50 years on insulin. I have an insulin pump for about 14 years & like it very much I am still learning - there is always more to learn about diabetes.

I was diagnosed when I was 20 years old and now I'm 31. I had all the symptoms but didn't realize it was diabetic symptoms till later. One morning I couldn't even get out of bed but def knew something was wrong! My body just shut down! My mom dressed me and took me to the doctors. I thought I had a bad case of the flu or something. Doctor came back in telling me I've been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and I cried. I didn't know what diabetes was but knew it wasn't good. My glucose reading was close to 1000. Got hospitalized with lots of needles in me. Body felt like collapsing. It was the biggest life adjustment I've had to make. Getting it in my early twenties was difficult because that's when "life is suppose to be starting" and the time where you feel in your prime but for me life seemed it was slowly ending. Struggled with depression but overcame it with God! God is the difference maker for me and the hope I wake up everyday with!
