#46: Happy Coincidences.

Last week, I announced on Twitter that I had my upcoming endocrinologist (read: diabetes doctor) appointment on the upcoming Monday (the 15th). In fact, I’d noticed quite a few people sharing their latest A1Cs in the last couple of weeks, and I thought it was funny that everyone had their appointments at the same time. However, given more thought, it makes sense. Most of us probably had our last appointment before the Christmas season, in October and November, and March is roughly around the time most of us have to go back for our quarterly check-in. Anyway, after I tweeted that it was my turn up to bat, Karen, a gal from Brooklyn, tweeted back asking me if I was going to Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center. As it happens, I was. So we exchanged appointment times and it turns out, we were seeing the same doctor half an hour a part! How crazy, right? We decided to meet up at Starbucks across the street, and had a bit of time to chat before our respective appointments. Of course, there’s never enough time when you’re meeting an online friend for the first time, so we’re obviously going to hang out again soon. But I thought it was so fun that we were able to sync our schedules and I was able to meet yet another online friend! Woohoo!

#47: Being helpful.

One of the things I’ve always gotten a kick out of is helping people and answering questions. I do this a lot at work, since I specialize in social media and not a lot of people are as familiar with blogs and Twitter and Facebook and Foursquare and Google and Flickr and… well, you get the idea… as me. So when someone asks me a question and I am able to explain it, I am very happy. It kind of makes me day to share the wealth. I feel the same way about educating people about diabetes. When I am able to explain to someone how an insulin pump works or what the difference between type 1 or type 2 is or even just saying, “No, you’re not crazy” and the person “Ohhhhhh” I am like “Yay! And today I found out that I could actually be SAVING LIVES by doing this. Yeah, that’s right. According to a study at the University of Washington, people who reached out for support were more likely to live longer with diabetes. I am providing a LIFE-SAVING RESOURCE! Who needs to go to medical school and become a doctor when you’ve got THE INTERNET?!

#48: Pregnant ladies.

Maybe this is a sign that I’m getting old, but it seems like more and more people I know are getting pregnant and having babies. First, it was my classmates from high school. Then it was Kerri. Then it was a friend of a friend of Erik’s. Then it was a couple twentysomething bloggers I read online. Everybody’s having babies! (It seems.) And I love it! I think pregnant women are so cool, because they are so happy and excited (when they aren’t, you know, throwing up and whatnot). But I think pregnancy is really cool (if it’s something you want, of course). Not that I want to be a pregnant lady anytime soon. First of all, I’d like to be a married pregnant lady and second of all, I’d like to be a healthy, A1C in the Baby Zone pregnant lady. But until then, I will vicariously enjoy the excitement of other pregnant ladies and the babies that come from them!
