Default Type 1 & Pregnant

Hi, I am 22 years old. I've been type 1 since the age of 16. At one time I had my blood sugars under good control. Recently I switched to a pump and my A1c was very high because I wasn't using it effectively. Within the last two weeks I've been trying to control my sugars better but haven't been successful all the time. Yesterday I found out that I'm pregnant with my first baby. Probably about 6 wks. I'm shocked & terrified because I worry about any damage I may have already caused within these past few weeks of not so good sugars. Fortunately I can eat better and control my sugar better from here on it. I'm very healthy otherwise. I have no complications from diabetes, I'm normal weight and very active. Is there anyone out there who found out they were pregnant without initial good bg control but had a healthy baby? Please help. Thanks!

Wow! We have very similar stories. I was diagnosed at 15 and became pregnant when I was 21, baby at 22. I had poor control to begin with and was on injections. My son ended up being 10lbs. because of crazy blood sugars. We are now expecting our 2nd child, due in July and this time I am on an insulin pump. What a difference! Don't worry though, even if your baby is somewhat larger, it will be fine. The doctors are going to help you get your blood sugars controlled. DON't STRESS! Your baby will be healthy and so will you!!

I found out I was pregnant and didn't have good control for the first 4 weeks of pregnancy but once I found out I got very serious and checked my blood sugar at least 8 times a day. With the gel of my husband and. Wonderful and very strict doctor I gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 39 weeks(they wouldn't let me go past 39 and induced me with pitocin) and he weighed in at 3.3 kilos which is very very good!

You absolutely can have a healthy baby and an easy pregnancy even if you didn't start out well controlled but having a doctor that knows how to work your pump and manage the increase in insulin that you will need is the most important. A high risk OBGYN is ideal, not an endocrinologist.

Stay positive and shoot for a blood sugar of 120 an hour after meals, that's what I was advised and I never thought it was possible but I did it most of the time. Oh and you should be seeing your OBGYN every 2 weeks during the first and last trimester.

Good luck and stay positive.... And get some rest while you still can !

It's encouraging to find other T1 moms who have been there. I wish I had this during my first two pregnancies. I'm 25 weeks tomorrow and feel like this is the best controlled pregnancy so far, but I want even tighter control than this. It is hard to stay on top of it, but don't let it fall out of your hands. Eat healthy, exercise and push your docs for tight control. How is it going with the pump? Did you find a good high risk OB? Hope all is going well and it sounds like we're around the same spot, so feel free to ask questions!

Ewa: congrats! Count your carbs and always check with your should be high risk doctor . They will tell you how much carb per meal is recommended and in between snacks. Be completely honest with them. Keeping your sugars under control will help you and your baby... but as of right now having a healthy baby is main priority. Anyways when is your due date?

Default Gestationtal Diabetic

Hi Guys,

I found out yesterday that I have gestational diabetes. My doctor said that 135 was abnormal and mine is 204. She set me up an app with a midwife this Tuesday and called me in a meter. I've never had to deal with this before at all. I'm deathly scared of needles and worried that my baby could be in danger. I'm 29 weeks along already. This is my first pregnancy. My sister taught me how to use my meter today (She's a nurse) so I can start checking before Tuesday. My levels today the highest has been 124. I don't know whether it was a fluke or what. Good Luck to everybody.

Jkey: your readings for fasting should be 90 & below, two hours after meals 120 & below. Try to keep them in that range so you and baby will be fine. GL and congrats!

Hi,
I'm 23 and am 5 1/2 weeks pregnant. I just have a quick question. I have been super sick with morning sickness but woke up today and didn't feel sick at all. I actually almost feel like normal self.... So I'm just wondering if anyone knows if this is normal or if I should contact my doctor. Since this my first pregnancy not really sure what to expect and am a little worried.
