Default Things That Make Me Happy: #27-#30

27. Comments on my blog

Holy Moses, you guys! WOW! I tell ya, I have the BEST readers on this blog. Thank you so much for all of the thoughtful comments from the past three days. It was fascinating reading everyone’s thoughts on the choice of words conundrum, and it was great to hear other experiences from growing up with diabetes and of course, thank you for the well wishes on my anniversary yesterday. They mean the WORLD to me. Last month, I talked about whether or not I wanted to shut down my comments section. And truth be told, sometimes I still think about it, just to be free from the wondering and worry about whether or not a post will get any feedback or if the intended purpose is understood. But I will always have some posts open, and the past three days have definitely proven why. I love hearing from you – especially all my new readers. At the end of this blog post, I would love it if you would leave a comment just to introduce yourself. It does NOT have to be related to this post at all. Just a little bit about how you found me and what you’re interested in hearing from me, and of course, please tell me where I can find you! I’m a big fan of reading blogs.

28. Online radio stations

For a long time, I never listened to music at work. I don’t know why, but I only really listened to work every so often, when my brain was a little fried and I needed to get myself jazzed up again. Nowadays? I have to listen to music. I seriously cannot function at work without having my headphones on and some tunes to groove to while I play around with analytics. My favorite place to listen to music: KINK.fm. It’s an alternative rock station based out of Portland, Oregon (naturally) and it was one of my favorite stations back then. It’s a little bizarre when the DJs come on and talk about traffic or the weather, because I am three thousand miles away, but their music selection is great. Some of my more recently discovered favorites include Heaven Right Here by Jeb Loy Nichols (a really great song to groove along too – it reminds me of the blogging community, actually!), Just Say Yes by Snow Patrol (sigh… who doesn’t love Snow Patrol, right?), Right as Rain by Adele (she’s funky – love her!), Water from a Vine Leaf by William Orbit (kinda electronic/trance-y but not over the top in a weird way – also, to buy it on iTunes, click the Beth Orton version, it’s the same song), and Say Hey (I Love You) by Michael Franti (this song will take your frown and turn it upside – you cannot help but smile at this song!). If you download any of them, let me know what you think!

29. Writing

I have been writing my whole life. It’s basically the only thing I actually think I’m any good at. So if I suck at this, please don’t tell me. I don’t have anything else. I started writing stories when I was in first grade. My first book? It was called Snow White and the One Dwarf. I’m not sure if it was a prequel or a sequel, but I was six years old, so there you go. I don’t share many embarrassing things on this blog, so treasure that little fact because you’re not getting one for awhile. My downfall was the fact that though I started about thirty eight thousand stories between the age eight and eighteen, I finished a grand total of like, five. Maybe. It might have been four and half. One of my favorite things to do actually was write fanfiction. I specialized in Star Trek fanfic. Because I’m a geek. But I really liked it and people seemed to think I was good, so I kept doing it for awhile. But I wrote under a pen name so, sorry, you’re not going to be able to find anything to blackmail me with using Google. So, I lied. You get TWO embarrassing facts about myself. Sigh. So that’s why I think I work so well with blogging. It doesn’t take that *much time and yet I have probably written the equivalent of, like, Moby Dick, Anna Karenina and War and Peace COMBINED. Because my editor button is stuck and I haven’t gotten around to fixing it.

30. Reading a good book

I think this goes hand-in-hand with my love for writing and traveling (which is coming later in this list). Reading a good book was always like traveling because I could be transported to cities and countries and centuries that I would never be able to go to on my own. My first favorite book was A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. I sat in a rocking chair next to my window and I read it in about three days. Another favorite book: The Diary of Anne Frank. LOVE! I have read it about four times now. Maybe three and a half. I remember really identifying with Anne even though I was a white, Protestant American growing up sixty-odd years later. But I think there were common themes that transcend beyond culture, language and time. I think that’s why I love books.

Ahem. Now go leave a comment. Please. Thank you.
