Thumbs down Metformin and Diet

Ok, so I'm confused and my diabetes educator is out of town. I thought I'd post a message and maybe you lovely people can give me some insight. So I had an A1C of 7.6 about 2 months ago. With diet and exercise, my blood sugars ranged between 74-165 with an occasional high of close to or just over 200. I started Metformin ER 500 mg once a day after about a month of doing diet and exercise. With diet and exercise included, my blood sugars now range from 85-175 with a high of 241!! My question is if the medication works, which mine obviously doesnt at this dose, can I basically eat what I want or at least start adding foods back into my diet that had be cut out? I mean, what's the point in taking the medication if it RAISES my blood sugar or has no noticeable effect?
