Default Which is more important Average or Avoiding High Numbers?

I am newly diaganosed with diabetes and still trying to understand the implications. I seem to be able to manage by glucose levels with diet and exercise and have had only one spike out of range after a carb heavy lunch.

My question is what is more important? Maintaining a good average glucose level or avoiding spikes?

If all my numbers are in range for weeks and I decide to splurge one day and drive up my glucose levels for the day, that's not going to drastically affect my average. Is it my A1c number that matters most, or the day-to-day, hour-to-hour glucose levels?
