Diagnosed with GD but blood sugar never high?
Hi ladies,
I was diagnosed with GD again with my second pregnancy but I'm so confused by it because I have a blood glucose monitor from my first pregnancy and despite not being overly careful with what I eat, my readings are always low!!!! With my first pregnancy I was shattered when I was first diagnosed with GD. My GTT figures were right on the 'cut off' point for GD. I went to the clinic, got my monitor and started tracking my blood glucose. It NEVER reached limit of 7 two hours after meals and it never got close to 5.5 before breaky. Even the specialist at the Diabetes Centre told me at my follow up appointment that my levels were great and that he felt it was likely that I did not actually have GD and I was told to only check my blood glucose randomly to keep an eye on things. I relaxed with my diet and found that no matter what I ate, it never went high. Now second time round I started checking randomly after 12 weeks and found my levels to be normal. Last night I ate shepherds pie with corn on the cob, broccoli and peas and even washed it down with a full glass of cherry coke that my MIL bought for me and my reading was 5.4 two hours later. My hubby asked to check his too and he was the same as me, despite not having any coke!!! Then I get a voicemail later that night from the hospital saying I have GD!!!! This morning I made myself a HUGE bowl of honey weets for breakfast just to see if my blood sugar would go up, I checked it 2 hours later and it was 5.6.....I would have thought that if I had GD my blood sugars would be higher than that after a big bowl of sugary cereal???? Sorry about the long post, I guess I'm hoping anyone who does have GD can tell me if their blood sugar is generally higher after eating 'naughty' foods. I just don't know how I get these test results back saying I have it when my blood sugar is never high..... Anyone else's personal experiences would be most appreciated All the best! |
