Hi GB community!
I am 44, been Type 2 for 13 or 14 years and never really took it seriously. I would treat it for several years but never really stuck to a diet. I lost 80 pounds on a fad diet back in 2010 and didn't need insulin, so I thought I beat Diabetes back then...but as old eating habits came back with no insulin, my Type 2 came back with a fury...I treated it on and off...then for the past year ignored the diabetes, ate whatever I wanted, didn't see a Dr. and took no insulin.
I wound up with DKA (Diabetic Ketone Acidosis, for those unaware). YOU DON'T WANT IT. I spent a week in the hospital, got out just over a week ago and still am not back at work. Working on getting my levels to the normal stage. How bad were my Blood Glucose levels when I went into the hosp? Nearly a 700 at the time, and I had not eaten for days, because I had just come off a stomach bug, which is likely what through me into DKA. My A1C was a 17! Needless to say, I am now ultra-serious about my diabetes...checking more often than I was even ordered to, watching what I eat...barely eating bread (even 100 percent whole wheat, because it still seems to spike me)...unfortunately, I am a very picky eater so getting sick of chicken breast very quickly. Still, I'd rather have boring meals than feel the way I did when the ambulance took me to the hospital and they told my GF that 10 more hours and I could have gone into a diabetic coma. Anyway, thanks for reading and welcoming me here. Joel |
