Default just diagnosed with GD & struggling with carbs

Hi all. I was diagnosed with GD last Thursday. My levels were high enough to go straight to insulin. I generally eat a low carb / low GI diet & am really struggling to eat the required amount of carbs (3-4 serves of carb for breaky, lunch & dinner, 1-2 serves for snacks). i get how having carbs evenly spread out over the day can help but don't understand how basically doubling or tripling my carb intake & eating so much more food than i normally do is going to be of benefit when I already had high blood glucose levels on a lower carb diet. I felt like a stuffed pig after trying to eat everything I should yesterday & still didn't hit the targets at every meal. Can anyone shed some light?? Thanks.

I wish I had an answer for you but just wanted to let you know I'm struggling with the same thing. I was just diagnosed on Monday and have been trying to follow the dietician's meal plan but feel so stuffed after lunch and dinner and can barely eat a snack before bedtime. It doesn't seem to be working though because my lunch and dinner 2 hour post meal BS readings are still high and so are my fasting. Hopefully someone can respond to this and help us out!

only thing I can think of is that perhaps it's not specifically GD but T1 or T2 diabetes? especially the first poster who is already on insulin, already eats low carb, but still has issues.

who is diagnosing you with GD? is it your OB? I would maybe see an Endocrinologist to rule out anything else and definitely check your A1c.

of course also speak with your nutritionist/dietician and discuss these issues as well - your meal plan can and SHOULD be customized to current lifestyle and eating habits.

Your fasting numbers are not diet based. They are based on your hormonal interactions while your body is at rest. Make sure whenever you eat carbs at your meals, that you are mixing in plenty of low fat proteins as well. Stick with low fat, not non fat. When fat is removed from foods, sugar is often added to make up the flavor. Be sure to read labels and portion sizes
