Exclamation Proactive backup of iTouch

My husband just lost some application data (not GB) on his iPhone. We understand (?) that some application data is not updated when the unit is synched with iTunes, depending on how the application was written to function. We also see a backup option when we right click the unit on the iTunes explorer.

I'd like to avoid this predicament by really knowing how to proactively back the data up (on my own hardware, not with 2-way sync so the process applies to all similarly written apps), and have it available to restore in case of crash.

Options I've considered include the right-click on the iTunes explorer, click backup (what the heck is it doing when it says its backing up during the sync?), or to purchase another piece of software like Touchcopy.

Any info/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

The back up "sync" to iTunes should be sufficient. The backup file has worked for me on several occasions. Basically, with my iPhone, I have had to rebuild it from a new phone every time that I updated to a new iOS. Hopefully, with the new iOS 5.0, I won't have to do that anymore. Unfortunately, there was that one time that I had to use the two-way-sync from GB. I am just saying that you will be able to get your GB data back with the restore most-times and if you need it you can go the two-way-sync route.
