Default March 2015 Diagnosis Type 2

I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease and type two diabetes in March after a trip to the ER with intense side pain and feeling horrible overall. I had an A1C of 9.7 and was prescribed Metformin. I met with a diabetic educator and got to work on my diet.

I just had a follow-up visit yestrerday. My average BG started out at 255 and yesterday it was 205. I'd also lost 3 pounds. I got a big lecture. Apparently he expected to see more progress. I also felt like because I'm not cured of the diabetes he didn't believe me that I'm not eating a bunch of crap. I'm discouraged so I spent today researching trying to figure out where I'm going wrong.

Now, on top of being discouraged I'm confused because the amount of carbs my DE is saying I can have (which is in his packet for all clients) for each meal is way below what I'm finding on the American Diabetes, Mayo Clinic, Diabetic Living and other websites. 15 Carbs for breakfast, 20 carbs for lunch and 40 for dinner (total carbs, not net carbs). Also, his list of banned foods includes several foods that the websites say are okay (avocado, fruit, berries, legumes, grains). So basically today I said 'screw it' and ate what I wanted in total disregard for the carb limits. Not crap, but instead of half a tuna sandwich I ate a whole one with two slices of bread (30 carbs for just the bread) with *avocado* (because I'm a rebelious sort), tomatoes, onions, pickles. My post lunch reading was AWESOME. Lower than it's been since this whole thing started.

Does anybody have any thougts on the carb limits and counting actual carbs rather than net carbs?

Welcome to the Forum!

Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. Good luck with your control and management.
