Carb friendly snacks
Hi all,
My 7 year old son was diagnosed last week with t1 and its overall been terrifying but comforting knowing that we can manage it through insulin and diet. Prior to the diagnoses, my son ate all day everyday and now he is limited to his three meals until we get the dosage correct. He is able to have a 15g carb or less snack mid afternoon. Im looking for ideas beyond, carrots, celery, sugar free jello or string cheese. thanks in advance for your ideas Kim |

A four pack peanut butter nabs is very near that, assuming that he can have PB. You will learn quickly that you have to read the labels on every package of food. Pay particular attention to the number of servings per container. Good luck.

Snack ideas
hello my 5 year old daughter was diagnosed last week as well. We are going through the same label reading and finding snacks. Please note these are not 100% healthy but here are a few that we have found for a variety: beef jerky small sticks are 5carbs each so 4, pepperoni is 0 carbs, pork skins are 0, we found protein granola bars at sams club that are 14 carbs, and sugar free chocolate pudding 14 carbs

Nuts are great snacks
Hi there - sorry to hear about your child - I know it's going to be tough for you but you'll make it.
I recommend nuts as they are low carb and provide protein and calories for active kids. They are also easy to carry around and don't go off! Good luck |

Hi Markboardman61... I have not enough experience with that but mostly heard about many people that nuts is the best idea for kids in that kind of case

Hi! One of my 7 year old twins was diagnosed with T1D the week before Christmas. She's an extremely picky eater so we've really struggled with snacks. Fortunately, she does enjoy most fruit, string cheese, pepperoni, and carrots. Granola, nuts and nut butters...she won't touch 'em. We are completely out of ideas and we've only been at this a month!
While her sister is very supportive, she's terrified that T1D is contagious! She's trying her best to eat as much as she can on her twin's behalf. Overwhelmed, K. Last edited by krischael; 01-25-2014 at 07:35 AM. |

My 3 yr old was diagnosed just over a month ago. Some of our go to snacks have been goldfish crackers (you can have like 45 for 15g), the breadsticks and cheese packs made by Kraft (14g), fruit leather I found at Walmart (12g), squeeze applesauce (14g), and a combination of cheese, pepperoni, ham, and a few crackers. Make yourself some baggies with crackers and things counted out so you can just grab then when you are on the go. Good luck!

we also do yogurt and hummus and crackers...we can't do Peanut butter but he will eat sunbutter on occasion.

Our 7 yr old son was also diagnosed just before Christmas.
He generally eats 3 meals a day and 1-2 snacks, but each meal or snack only has a maximum of 15 carbs (this is effective/net carbs, so total carbs minus fiber). He's honeymooning, so managing his carbs this way and taking Lantus once a day has worked to keep him stable so far, but we know YDMV! Here are the products that we can not live without! Breads/Pasta - Nature's Own makes a low calorie bread with only 40 calories a slice (we don't count calories, just carbs, but I mention it because it's the only way to find the right one at the grocery store!) - the Honey Wheat has 13g net carbs in 2 slices, so you can use it to make a sandwich or a half sandwich and be at 15 carbs or less. Mission makes a low carb flour tortilla called Carb Balance. It has 6 net carbs per tortilla and they taste just like a regular wrap. I use them for sandwiches with lunch meat and cheese, to make breakfast burritos with eggs, cheese, sausage or bacon, pinwheels with cream cheese and turkey or ham, I even wrap hotdogs in them instead of using hot dog buns. They are also great for little "pizzas" - top with tomato sauce and shredded cheese and whatever other toppings, pop in the oven until cheese is melted. Oh, and they work for tacos too ! Dreamfields makes low carb pasta - it tastes just like regular pasta and has about 5 g effective carbs per serving. I use the lowest carb tomato sauce I can find (the canned sugar free kind is the lowest, I usually add some garlic and olive oil to it to make it taste better or if I'm in a hurry, I use either Ragu No Sugar Added Tomato & Basil (8 net carbs in 1/2 cup) or Barilla Traditional (10 net carbs in 1/2 cup). Milk - Hood Calorie Countdown - Chocolate & 2% White - I cannot rave about this product enough. Walmart carries it, but I asked my local Publix and they've started carrying it as well. The 2% tastes just like regular milk, it's amazing and it only has about 3 g net carbs for 1 cup. The chocolate milk is creamy and delicious, seriously. My son drinks it every morning. It is way better than what the sugar free Hershey's syrup makes. It has 4 net carbs in 1 cup. Unsweetened Almond Milk, Coconut Milk, Almond/Coconut Milk - this comes in cartons in the dairy section, I like Blue Diamond or So Delicious the best, but Silk makes varieties as well. You have to make sure that it's unsweetened, and then it's 0 to 1 carb per 1 cup serving, depending on which you get. My son doesn't like the taste of it to drink, but your's might! I use it in baking in place of milk now. Other Snacks - Sabra Hummus - they sell 2 oz snack containers that have 5g net carbs. I serve this with mini carrots, celery, mini crackers. Del Monte makes 2 oz containers of guacamole that have 1 net carb each. I serve this with 2 tblsp of salsa (2 net carbs) and Tostitos Bite Size Chips (each chip has 0.7 net carbs, so about 17 chips) for 15 carbs. Frozen Meatballs - check labels, but Publix's has 4 net carbs for 6 Babybel - my son loves these in both the regular and Mozzarella - the shape is different from a regular cheese stick and he likes to peel them open. Each is listed as having 0 carbs, but I count them as 0.5 carbs, just in case. Cream cheese - flavored or not - filled celery sticks Goldfish Puffs (not regular) have 0.5 net carbs for each piece, my son loves the Cheddar Bacon flavor Simply Cheetos Puffs in White Cheddar have 0.5 net carbs for each piece My son loves yogurt - we use either Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt Blends in various flavors (9 net carbs) or Dannon Light & Fit Diabetic Friendly (3 net carbs) with cereal. Quaker makes flavored rice mini cakes called Popped. They sell them in small individual bags that have 12 net carbs each. Fiber One 90 Calorie Granola Bars and their various snack bars (lemon, brownie, chocolate chip, cinnamon) all taste great and have less than 15 net carbs each. Low Carb Pizza - I make my own using this recipe - http://yourlighterside.com/2012/02/easy-pizza-crust/ My son will not eat chicken. at. all. He has no idea there's chicken in this. He loves it. Your carb count with vary with toppings or what tomato sauce you use, but mine ends up with 3g net carbs per slice. I make a batch over the weekend, cut into slices, store in the fridge for snacks or lunch. It reheats great in the oven (I haven't tried the microwave, but I suspect it wouldn't be very crunchy that way). I've also started baking. I've used recipes from here - http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com for donuts, muffins, and chocolate chip cookies. Her cheese biscuits are also great for snacks and sandwiches. carb free snacks
my daughter has been diagnosed for 7yrs now and is almost 11...
diagnosis takes adjustment for all the family... our saviour has been some of the following which are all free: strawberries, carrot sticks, cucumber sticks, cherrie tomatoes, cheese slices, cherrie boccincini all of which make it to the lunch box for extras for just in case she is starving... some other carb options are home made fresh popped pop corn, 6 salada squares, 6 x savoy crackers with or without vegemite, dried banana slices, (careful though dried fruit can be high in carbs ~ so not much volume for carb content. when she is "SO STARVING she could die" I suggest she first have a drink of water with or without lemon juice and then 15mins later if she is still starving, we try a snack then and we can usually manage her hunger without overloading carbs... life is more difficult when she has a growing spurt as food increases and then so can her BGL's but we can up activity to help balance that out... best of luck with your family's new chapter |
