Default Too much Metformin?

I've never been told what normal ranges are. I take 500mg of Metformin in the morning and one at night. When I eat dinner, i find myself eating more carbs than i should because my testing levels don't get above 150. For instances, i can have a whole baked potato, chicken and veggies and two hours later my testing will only be 140. Seems like it takes me three hours to have it peak. My doctor moved me rom 500mg to 1000mg about a year ago and since then I've lost almost 20 pounds. AIC is 6.3 Can I be taking too much medication?

Normal Range

I believe that the maximum dosage of Metformin is 2000 mg per day.

If you think that you are taking too much Metformin, you should consult your doctor. You should strive to keep your blood sugar in the neighborhood of 100 mg/dl during the day. It appears that you may be eating too many carbs. Read the first three threads in the Type 2 Section when you get a chance, they may help you a lot.

Default Weight and Metformin

I started out taking 2000 mg of metformin a day when my glucose was in the 200 to 300 range, but then I went on an exercise regimen, started watching what I ate, and ended up dropping about 24 lbs. I went back to my physician and he reduced my dose from 2000 to 1000 a day. I now take only one 1000 mg pill a day with my dinner and that's it. My measurements are in the range of 80 - 100, sometimes they go a bit above 100, but typically they are 80 to 90 range. I do try to eat more grains and fiber, but I don't necessarily watch my carbs that much anymore.

I'd suggest you talk to your doctor and see if you can get on a lower dose, especially with your weight loss. Good luck!
