Default Because I Just Can?t Think of Anything Else.

I’ve been total crap at “writing a blog post in advance,” which is how I’ve managed to keep up with blogging since starting my new job. But thankfully today is Tuesday which means it’s Ten on Tuesday Day, courtesy of Roots & Rings. Enjoy!

1.* What book, movie or song has made you want to travel to a particular place? (e.g. I went to Prince Edward Island because I was such a Anne of Green Gables fan)

I’m reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and it makes me want to travel to Guernsey Island in the English Channel. I’m not even sure what’s there! Sometimes when I see a movie or TV show about a quaint, all-American small town with mom-and-pop shops and everyone knows each other’s name (and secrets), it makes me want to move there. I think it would be an interesting experience (and total culture shock!) after having lived in New York City.

2. Aside from your significant other, who would you want to take with you on a dream trip?

My mom and I have traveled a lot together, so I think going with her would be fun. But going on a trip with my brother is also on my 101 Things List only because we have never gone anywhere together, just the two-of-us. I think that would be fun too.

3. Where would said dream trip be to?

With my mom, I would like to go somewhere she hasn’t been. We talked about going to Ireland after we got back from our trip to France, so possibly there. With my brother… well, he hasn’t traveled too much outside of the U.S. so I would be up for going anywhere. I don’t really have that many “dream” trips because I pretty much just want to go everywhere!

4. If you were hosting guests or providing tips, what three things would you show visitors to your hometown? (Be it where you live now or where you grew up.)

Well, my physical hometown doesn’t have anything in it, so I’ll go with the closest big city: Portland (about a 15 minute drive away). In Portland, I suggest you go to: Powell’s Bookstore, the Saturday market, and Voodoo Doughnuts (where I suggest purchasing their bacon doughnut). They are all within walking distance of each other, so this isn’t difficult to do.

In NYC, my suggestions are: Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Staten Island Ferry (which gives you gorgeous views of downtown and the Statue of Liberty and it is free).

5. If you had a long weekend ahead of you, where you head – beach, city or country/mountains?

We like to visit other cities in the Northeast, so we would probably try to go to Boston or Philadelphia. But we like to mix things up, so going to a small seaside town like Newport, RI or going to Upstate New York isn’t out of the question either.

6. Do you have a passport? If so, did you get it for a particular trip or just to have, in case?

Yes, I have a passport. We got it when I was 17 so I could go to France with my mom after my high school graduation. I have used it once since then, when I went to England.

7. Are there any travel souvenirs you collect? If not, is there something else you collect?

I collect shot glasses. I have well over 50 now, and I don’t even have all of them in my apartment. About half are at my parent’s house in Oregon. I also ask people to buy shot glasses for me when they travel, since I know that I won’t be able to travel everywhere. I started collecting when I was 15 and I didn’t think I would be traveling very much, so I just started asking people who traveled to bring me back one. I find shot glasses to be a interesting representation of the place. I am very picky when it comes to my shot glasses since I have so many. It took me about 20 minutes to decide on my Delaware shot glass when I went to Rohoboth Beach in 2008!

8. If you could name a paint colour, what colour would it be and what would you call it?

I’ve never been very good at this. I would probably pick a shade of purple and call it Perfect Purple. I love purple, so it always seems like the perfect color to me.

9. If you were heading away for a weekend city break solo, where would you go? (Forget about practicality here and flight times, assume you can get to any city in the world for the weekend.)

Amsterdam. Definitely. I am itching to go.

10. Is there a song or a smell or something that you strongly associate with a particular holiday/place/time, such that it always takes you back?

I can’t think of any song that I associate strongly with a place or time. And if there is, I can’t think of what it is. I think this is one of those “when it happens, I can tell you” kinds of questions, but it’s not top of mind at the moment… Sorry!
