Uh-oh: Menopause
I've been using this program for a few days now and it's great. I've had Type 2 for about 5 years and never logged until I got my iPhone and I am excited to keep it up. My question is for the ladies in the bunch:
I've just started experiencing peri-menopause symptoms (hot flashes, sweats, etc.). I'm very darn emotional and it has been throwing my Blood Sugars off quite a bit, but I'm not sure it's because I'm stressed or if this is natural during the onset of menopause. Any tips from people who have been where I am now? |

Hi
Have you recently changed any of your diabetes medication? It might be a side effect of that I had similiar symptoms when I started using a certain brand of long acting insulin. Other than that I did find this on the net: The hormones estrogen and progesterone affect how your cells respond to insulin. After menopause, changes in your hormone levels can trigger fluctuations in your blood sugar level. You may notice that your blood sugar level is more variable or less predictable than before. If your blood sugar gets out of control, you have a higher risk of diabetes complications. Hope it helps! |

I guess I can't offer too much advice but I'm in the same boat as you. Seems my BS levels are harder to control now a days. I've decided to start adding more exercise into my day and watch my diet a lot closer to see if I can get tighter control. Good luck to you also!

I am in menopause and have been having a hard time controlling the diabetes. I exercise and eat mainly protein but the bg is still hard to control. Good luck!

Hi I was experiencing same fluctuating blood sugars, terrible mood swings, menstrual flooding and night sweats which weren't hypos! Then Drs offered me the mareena (spelling?) coil which took time to adjust to with higher insulin requirements but now free of all meno symptoms! It took 12 months for it to stop monthly menstruation but now feel fantastic! Drs recommended it to me for diabetics in this situation or I was heading for op!

My doc told me that menopause and diabetes don't mix. He said that I have to test a lot and really watch what I'm eating. I'm on a pump and lately with my diet and exercise changes I've been going low. The exercise has helped increase my libido and brought my bg down. You may need to go to the doc though and tinker with your carb ratio.

I wonder if hormones affect it also. I've noticed by levels go up during this time. I have not been diagnosed with Diabetes however my doctor did put me on a diet counting calories. My H1C was at 6.5 & she's given me 3 months to drop 10 pounds. I've lost 6 pounds.

Monitoring Glucose
Try using a continuous glucose meter - it will Change your Life for the Better !! During those times when your blood sugars are SO unpredictable - the 24X7 monitoring will improve the quality of your Life :-) I learned AFTER I completed Menopause - and Wish I had used it during Menopause. I now use a Dexcom Monitor ALL the time. Yes - it cost - but it's worth every dime. I'm a new person now
