tattoos
This year is marking my 10th year of being diagnosed with diabetes and I was thinking about getting a tattoo as a for of celebration and just to show how much it has impacted my life. Is there anything I need to know in general before I get one?

Welcome to the Forum! When it comes to a tattoo; Just have a good idea of what you want before you get to the shop, pick a reputable shop and don't put one on the back of your neck or your head. Check with your local blood center, they know the reputable tattoo shops.

Hey,
I got a tattoo five years after being diagnosed. Really the only thing you need to be concerned about, along with everything the tattoo guys will tell you, is keeping it clean. As a Diabetic, I have noticed I heal slower than I used to. This comes into effect when you get a tat because you don't want it to get infected afterward. But as long as you do what the artist tells you, you should be fine. And yeah, reputable shops that are clean and have been around a while are best. |

I've had diabetes for nearly 20 years now and have had several tattoos done. Just make sure you use a reputable tattoo place and let the tattooer know you have diabetes, that way if you have a hypo or anything they will know why you are acting strange. I got my first tattoo on my back & had a hypo after about an hour (it was pretty big) because of the shock to my body. When the person first starts any tattoo as well, they will warn you before beginning and do a very small part of the design to make sure you can handle it before getting into their routine

I have 3. Look for a nice, clean place and be vigilant with the aftercare. And most important...pick something that you won't get tired of...they're tough to remove. LOL! Good luck!!
