Default Working to get control of Dia 2 - but bad news

I have had diabetes 2 for a number of years but have not been serious about doing what I can to get it under control. I am very over weight, 5'9", 300#, male and call from my doctor says my A1C test from last week came back 9.8.
I know very little about diabetes but I do know this is not good and very dangerous since the diabetes has the upper hand right now along with my obestity, I am likely going to make my wife a widow. I hope I can pull this out because she will have to carry a large burden if I am gone which will leave her with no income to live on plus debts I created. She does not deserve this. I have really messed her life up. If I am to go, hopefully she will find someone fairly quick to be a friend and better lilfetime partner than I ever was.

The doctor wants to see me tomorrow about the test. Since May 2 I have committed to healthy diabetic eating, drinking more water, walking every day and enrolled with the Diabetic Management Center at the local hospital. Since I started monitoring my glucose levels, they are at least going down. Example: first fasting level was 261. Fasting level this morning was 163. And levels after eating are coming down also. So hopefully I will have enough time to get control.

Welcome to the Forum!

Congratulations on taking the diabetes beast by the horns! Don't let your diabetes control you, you control it!

Read through the first three threads in the Type 2 Section, when you get a chance, if you have not already done so. These threads will most-likely help you a lot. Self education is one of the keys to successful management of your diabetes, along with a healthy / sensible diet and exercise. Basically, diabetes requires a life-style change for the better. A diabetes diet is not about restrictions - it's how everyone should eat - lean proteins, low fat, unprocessed carbs from fruits and vegetables and plenty of exercise. Good luck with your control and management.

Default Hang in there Tex

Hey Tex,

I usually don't reply to these posts, but yours touched me. I was recently diagnosed in Feb 2013 with T2, my A1c was 11+% and my bg was around 300. While I was not obese, I did have a few extra pounds around the gut, I'm 49yrs old, 5'6" started out at 200lbs (am now around 185lbs). My doctor said they gym would become my best friend and he encouraged me to get there 4-5 times a week or at least go for a walk during my lunch break to get it in. We didn't gain our weight overnight and we are not going to lose it overnight, so start out slow, drink lots of water and set reasonable goals. YOu will find that the weight will slowly come off (that's the best way to lose it, more likely it will stay off). I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow as a matter of fact, my A1c is now down to 6.6%.

I couldn't do it alone, my wife and I shop for healthy foods for our house (just me, wife and the cat) and there are healthy alternatives to the sweet tooth. I eat Atkins bars, they are low in carbs and it satisfies my desire for sweets, feels like I'm cheating, but I'm not!

Every now and then (usually on a weekend day) we will fall off the wagon and eat some bad food at a restaurant (red meat is my downfall, love it!). I don't beat myself up, I simply right the ship the next day, maybe drink more water than usual, and continue eating smartly.

It sounds like your numbers are coming down, so keep up the good work. Your wife will not become a widow, work at it together, you'll find that the BOTH of you will eat better, she'll find herself getting in better shape as well.

Take care my friend...clint.
