I try and get some exercise making sure my bg is above 120 before walking. Also reducing the amount is carbs a day to less than 180. It's a slow process for sure but every pound off helps. Good luck!

I'm newly diagnosed as a diabetic and my doctor put me on a consistent carb diet. No more than 60 carbs a meal and I have to take insulin on a sliding scale. As long as I'm conscious of every bite, I lose weight even though I am still getting control of my sugars. Also talking to my Endocrinologist he said its harder to lose weight on diabetic drugs (pills like Metformin) than straight insulin so talk to your doctor if you can stand the needles, it may help.

Lost Weight
Summer 2011: 230lbs
Summer 2013: looking at 160-165lbs (now at 168) Stopped all alcohol, very rarely have sugary drinks. Just enjoy water and club soda or seltzer. I do not eat Chinese or diner takeout. Actually, seldom eat out. Reduced red meat, salt, sugar, and "white foods". Increasd vegs, green salads, and water. I have regular appointents with a diabetic-management nutrinionist. Was placed on a daily 1600cal/180 plan where you record daily meals, snacks, weight, and exercise. (Cost of plan: $15 co-pay, 4 times/year, plus a more reliable weight scale.) I do not jog or run. I try to walk 2 to 5 miles a day(helps to have a dog). Results: 60-70 lb weight loss; done with Humalog: dose 7u Lantus nightly(may be off it too, leaving me with only Metformin); lower A1C's; lower bp and heart rate; heart's EF increased and I no longer have CHF; legs are much stronger and I can tolerate hills. By the way, I use iPhone4 apps: ----- Glucose Buddy(gl, a1c, weight, bp) ----- MyFitnessPal(food/calories/carbs, weight, activity/exercise) ----- BIDMC's Walking Club(pedometer) Mentally, I had to accept gradual weight loss and was not overly concerned with minor setbacks. Over time, my resolved got stronger and the weight was coming off. I was so happy when the scale read below 200lbs and I was starting to get comments such as "You look like a different person." And I strongly believe that I will not regain the weight. |

Multiple small meals
Five to six small diabetic friendly meals(low carb) per day and walking worked for me a few years ago... I had my blood sugar down to normal levels for a while but I like the starchy stuff too much and fell off the wagon for a while. Getting on track now and seems to be working still. If you can get through the first week... you can do it. I lost 30 lbs in about 6 months and didn't need any meds just controled the blood sugar levels with diet. Its hard work.

losing weight
The only thing that has worked for me was a plant-based diet. Very hard to stick to at first. I had no dairy,no meat and only 1 to 2 servings of a whole grain per day. I lost 15 lbs. in 5 weeks. Now that summer is here again, fresh fruits and vegetables are tastier. If you decide to try this for a few weeks, make sure to get enough protein from sources other than meat and take a good multi-vitamin.I will start anew with this plan. It works even if you cannot exercise much but I will be swimming 3x a week and doing some light weight training. Good luck!

I had been using an app that helped me keep track of calories, but to be honest, I'm new at getting my diabetes under control, and I didn't think about my stupid carbs. I just got my new tester going today. I've already lost 18 pounds, but my bg's today were surprising to me. High. I just got this app today, and have already learned so much! We just got a membership at the Y yesterday, so as soon as I get over this cold or whatever I'm sick with, I can't wait to start swimming. That's nice and low impact. I think that'll help the weight loss go more quickly.
