Dumb question I probably shouldn't be asking
...but I will anyway since everyone here is so helpful.
After researching and weighing the options, I want to get on the Dexcom G4 CGM and Animas Ping Combo. I currently have a Medtronic Paradigm pump, although it has been taking up residence in my drawer since I've been on a pump vacation for quite some time. Where do I start? Should I call my insurance company? Call Animas and Dexcom? I see that Dexcom has some paperwork that you can fill out on their website and they seem to "take care of the rest". Can I get any sort of financial bonus for returning my Paradigm to Medtronic? My next Endo appointment is in mid-April...should I just wait? I'd like to get the ball rolling and make this as easy as possible for my endocrinologist (and myself too). I'm really nervous my insurance is going to laugh at me and not approve either. Any tips for getting approved? |

The Dexcom G4 (CGM) is an excellent choice. I assume that you saw the different forms on the website, just make sure that you are a candidate for the CGM .... documented lows during the night and such.
The pump info I can't help with. I would think that since you were previously on the pump, the insurance should not have a problem. I think that I would call the Endo first and see what he/she has to say and then call or contact the CGM and pump companies. Normally they will take care of it all, but the doctor will have to prescribe both.

you can call the sales dept of each company and they will literally take care of everything. they will go through your insurance to see what you're eligible for, whether it's covered at 100% or what any deductibles/out of pocket expenses will be, etc. this will probably take a couple of days, max.
then, the next step is they'll call your Endo for a prescription which can be faxed. now, since you have an appt with your Endo in April, I would probably wait to discuss with him/her first - that way this isn't coming out of left field. and no, unfortunately, I don't think you can get any $ back for the paradigm - but you can always call Medtronic and ask. most insurances will pay for a new pump every 4 years, or sooner if you have a good enough reason (for example, for me, the paradigm buttons would keep getting stuck when I wore it during exercise because I'd sweat all over it). hope this has helped - good luck! |

Thanks! This has been consuming my life for the past 2+ weeks.
My reasons for wanting a CGM are the overnight lows and I am planning a pregnancy. And I want it. Haha. Hopefully they are good enough reasons for BCBS. I think I'll be making some phone calls this week! Thanks! |

Animas took my Medtronic Paradigm as a trade in for the new Animas pump.
