Default Nasonex and diabetes

We have been told by the diabetes doctors that steriods will effect BG numbers. My daughter is starting to get the "sniffles" and my wife wants to give nasonex, a nasal spray steroid. Does anyone know if the nasonex will cause problems like an oral steroid?

I have been using Nasonex on and off for years. I haven't noticed any rise in BG numbers. However, when I need to use the Nasonex the numbers are usually already up due to the cold that I have. I realize that an adult is different than a child, but I would at least try it in small dosage and watch the numbers.

Thanks Dano. Just a little over a month into this new lifestyle. But one thing we have learned that most of it is just trial and error, make small adjustments, take notes of everything and re-adjust when you have too.

You got it.

Normally, every time something is out of whack with us, the blood sugar will go up. Nothing much can be done about it, just monitor, eat if you can or substitute something like Gatorade or Sprite to still get the carbs & keep from getting dehydrated and take the insulin. Once the cold/sickness runs it's course we are back to normal.

I found this on the internet the other day; "steroids can cause hyperglycemia but with the dose of steroid that is delivered by Nasonex it shouldn't have an impact on your blood sugar levels, unless you are very susceptible." Reference

yep - usually, topical creams, inhalers and nasal sprays containing corticosteroids aren't a big worry since they're more local, it's the oral stuff like Prednisone you really need to watch out for since it's more systemic.

either way, if she needs it, she needs it - just test more frequently and adjust her insulin accordingly.

I know I've had to be put on Prednisone a few times over the years and my BGs shot up to the 400s and would hardly come down for days. It stinks, but sometimes you have to weigh the risks vs. benefits.

I think she should be fine with the Nasonex

Nasonex is actually a light duty steroid and does not cause much of a problem for sure. But then her we need to be sure about her immunity system. If she is really weak, then it might actually cause some problems for her.
