Default Dogs for Diabetics

Im a Type 1 diabetic and I wanted to mention a great program called Dogs for Diabetics. A friend of our family was diagnosed with Type 1 when she was 13. Her parents looked into a program called Dogs for Diabetics. The dog can sense low blood sugars and if a low occurs, he puts a red bean bag he has around his neck into his mouth. She was grocery shopping with her mom and the dog all of a sudden put the red bag in his mouth. Sure enough...she had a low. He is a great companion for her and she takes the dog everywhere...even to school. The dog has become a member of their family. There is an application process and possibly a waiting list but I thought I would share this because that program has helped someone who was struggling at such a young age. This particular program is in California but I would imagine there are similar programs nation wide. Best wishes everyone.

I am very interested in this program since I suffer with low blood sugars . I think they would possibly deny me since I have three dogs ? I'm wondering if they could train one of our dogs to sense the low blood sugars ? Any thoughts would be helpful thanks

I live in Oregon and know a teenager and an adult who have a diabetes dog. Both applied and got theirs for free from California. The program is free for all but you have to apply. It takes the trainers months to train the dogs and costs about $10,000 per dog to train. Right now both organizations are non profits.
