Hi. I've been trying the 5-2 diet. This diet has you eat normal for 5 days and fast ie less than 500 calories for 2 days. Has anyone tried this? I've just started and have noticed that on the days that I fast my blood sugar is lowest ie below 100 but the next day my blood sugar spikes to 140. Does anyone have any thoughts on fasting and why the blood sugar goes up so much the next day?

Most people find that counting carbs and eating the right kind of foods work better for their control. A diabetes diet is not about restrictions - it's how everyone should eat - lean proteins, low fat, unprocessed carbs from fruits and vegetables and plenty of exercise.

Conventional wisdom is wrong! At least for me, the Ketogenic Diet works best. High fat and protein, low carbs. Did 6 weeks last year, and bs stayed in the 80-100 range in last 4 weeks. Lost 30 lbs and 4" off waist. 5.8 a1c. Then back to normal diet, bad results! Finally decided to use Ketogenic Diet instead of more meds. In the first five days morning bs has dropped 50 points! Lots of info about this diet on the web and you tube. This is the diet our bodies are geneticly programmed to use. You would not believe how much better you will fill!

This is the 3rd week of my ketogenic diet. Last night before dinner, my bs was 99. This morning out of bed was 90. These are the first back to back bs readings below 100, and a good sign that this is how I need to eat. I do 5 days low carb, all the good fat I can eat, and plenty of protein. I have also lost 6 pounds in these 3 weeks. No starving, no skipping meals, no exercise yet. Will get back to regular exercise soon, but will continue to use the ketogenic diet as my normal way of eating. Energy level is amazing, and most of the weight loss is bodyfat!
