Default 8 Year Old w/Type 1

Hi everyone,

I just downloaded this app because my boyfriend's 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 on Monday. It's been a very difficult week. I have been researching all kinds of things to try to make their lives somewhat easier and in that process I found this app. So far I am loving it. I love that I can help by backing up some of this very important information. Now looking for tips on free foods and low carb snacks that an eight year old would enjoy. Not an easy task. Lol.

Welcome to the Forum!

Take a look at the food section here. Make sure that you all learn to count carbs. She can pretty much eat like anyone else, as long as she boluses for the carbs. Good luck with her control and management.

just want to second what Danny said - a T1 diet isn't low carb. if she's running high and you want a free food or low carb snack, that's fine, but while low carb will make it easier to manage with less insulin, you're restricting important energy she needs for growth and cell metabolism.

my favorite free foods - pickles and sugar free jello (also the occasional coke zero)

low carb options - think more low glycemic index, and stuff that has more fat and protein than carbs... it will slow the absorption of the carbs and not cause her to "spike"

hummus with celery or green beans
edamame
Japanese yam (shirataki) noodles
blueberries

*be careful of sugar free foods - it's not always carb free, also excess sugar alcohols have an *ahem* laxative effect

Try not to have too much sugar substitute. Water with lemon or lime. Iced tea... I've consumed many artificial sweetener in my 30 years as a juvenile diabetic & now, they know its not good for you. So far, stevia is natural & deemed safe, in moderation. Zero water uses stevia. I do like my Knox blox sugar free gelatin squares on rare occasions! shots, insulin pump, pod??? I was on pump since they first came out many years ago & they sure have changed! I just started insulets pod this past summer as I like to kayak & no tubing is great! I can swim with my pod(pump) & live it!!
