Hi everyone. I was so excited to discover this ap. Reading the all the forums really helps me deal with diabetes better. Ive had it for 14 yrs now, and have been recently dx with some other autoimmune disorders so any support i can hv outside my family is very healthy for me. For all of you with diabetes "god bless you." No matter how easy the media portrays to the public how easy it is to control all of us no better. Exercise high blood sugars and hormonal high blood sugars are never talked about on medical shows, providers even fail to see correlation between these two subjects and high blood sugar. The real funny one is eat low carb, which is what I follow, but the ignore the fact that all nutrients needs insulin to feed a type I diabetics cells.(all turns into sugar) When your type 1 protein, carbs or fat I still have to take insulin or Im high bs. For years on a low carb diet my endo cant tell me the formula of protein/fat insulin ratio and why dont they know. Her nurse told me to up my carb intake and lower my protein intake. Cheers to all of you who have had ignorant things said by a specialist. Diabetes is so frustrating.

Hi Sam - I think you might be a little confused... cells use protein and fat in the absence of carbs via gluconeogenesis which does NOT require insulin. Insulin actually INHIBITS gluconeogenesis.
Now, you might be on a LOW carb diet, but I'm assuming you still eat SOME carbs... which is why you still need insulin. That, and, let's not forget, your body still needs a basal rate of insulin on a daily basis to counteract the glycogen your liver puts out. I'm sorry you're frustrated with your health care team, but it sounds to me like you will still need to count the carbs you DO eat, and you will still need basal insulin (all T1s do). If you're still experiencing highs, either one of these will need some tweaking. I also want to point out that not all protein is created equal. High fat red meats actually do have carbs in them, and dairy most certainly has carbs - it's not just fat. I would encourage you to use something like cronometer.com to log your food to see exactly how low carb your diet is. Exercise highs are most certainly talked about, I would recommend this book: The Diabetic Athlete's Handbook - http://www.shericolberg.com/diabetic...s-handbook.asp Also, hormonal highs do suck - they're talked about, but this is what makes management of the disease so difficult - EVERYONE is different. It's important to experiment and figure out what works for YOU. As a woman with T1, I know I have to have a menstrual cycle plan in addition to a sick day plan, in addition to a alcohol drinking plan... it sucks, but at the end of the day, you can either roll with it and treat the disease like a pain in the ass but an opportunity to know your body and nutritional needs, or treat it as debilitating and confusing.
